The village of Payzac has grown up below the 12th century church which commands wonderful views in all directions. On a clear day the snow-capped summits of the Alps can be seen to the east. The picturesque school/town hall/library and former inhabitants of the village share this priviledged spot.
Payzac (Ardèche) mini guide
The houses of Payzac are either independent houses or houses clustered together in a small hameau. An excellent example of this is the small hameau of Barsac, which you can walk through and explore. There is a strong sense of community in Payzac and there are frequent gatherings in the community hall and a large and renown musical festival each July, the festival of the full moon. The community of Payzac swells to 2000 over this weekend. Payzac is part of a cicuit of venues which enables the arts to be brought into rural areas. There is also a cave where local grapes are pressed into the reds Merlot and Gamay, a local fresh white called Oralie and a collectors' wine made from ancient vines called Chatus. All can be bought very reasonably in the local shop.
Payzac has an epicerie which is well stocked and is run by the baker and his family. Bread is still baked in a bread oven over a fire made of wood. Next door is the local bar/cafe which is frequented by locals and the many cyclists and hikers who pass through the village. There is a tennis court and signposted walks from the village and free photocopied directions for local walks can be collected from the town hall.
There is also a private exhibition of traces of the first dinosaurs. A local man found imprints from early dinosaurs and has set up a small exposition.
Free guided tours of the church take place each week.
Each Sunday morning in July and August local poducers and artisans gather near the cave to sell their fresh produce and work.
