Shortly after its foundation in the 9th century, the Benedictine abbey of Vézelay acquired the relics of St Mary Magdalene and since then it has been an important place of pilgrimage. Basilica of St. Magdalene with its complicated program of imagery in sculpted capitals and portals, is one of the outstanding masterpieces of Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture, though much of its exterior sculpture was defaced during the French Revolution. South of the Eglise St-Lazare church in Avallon is the city's ancient gateway. A pathway meanders from the gateway and gives fine views over the Cousin Valley. On clear days you can see all the way to the hilltops to the Parc Naturel Regional du Morvan. Read more...
