The town was originally a protestant stronghold yet suffered badly during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century as it was pillaged and burned by Louis XIII in 1629.
It has largely been rebuilt, although there are a number of ancient houses that survived the destruction.
A good place to spend a few hours when you first arrive Privas is the Musée de la Terre Ardèchoise, which offers the chance to find out about the towns history and the seige of the town in 1629.
The museum also provides the opportunity to learn about the other attractions of the Ardeche such as its prehistoric monuments.
The scenery is stunning and a visit to the museum is a vital precursor to heading off into the countryside to marvel at the many preserved sites from the last 30 million years in the area.
Privas is the epicentre of the marron glacé (candied chestnut) business.
