Le Mans is probably most famous for its 24 hour motor race held annually since 1923, in Mid-June. The event is organised by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and is held on a circuit containing closed public roads.
The city is overlooked by its cathedral of St Julien which is an impressive mix of different architectural styles ranging from the 11th to the 15th Centuries. In the 13th century some stained glass windows were added and they are one of the oldest examples of stained glass windows in France.
The town has a historic town centre which has been carefully restored and original third and fourth century Gallo Roman walls still encircle the medieval streets in the old town.
Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Maine and Anjou, married Matilda, daughter of Henry I of England, here in 1129 and their son, the future King Henry II of England, was born.
The Musée de Tessé, on avenue de Paderborn is the towns fine art museum. Here you can see a selection of various pictures and statues including an enamel portrait of Geoggrey Plantagenet. This was originally part of his tomb in the cathedral, and is the biggest medieval artefact crafted from enamel in Europe.
