Auvillar (Tarn-et-Garonne)

The village of Auvillar, officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages of France, is largely built of local red brick and enjoys an imposing view over the Garonne Valley.

The Place de la Halle is an unusual triangular 'Square' with a stunning circular Grain Market at its heart - the Halle aux Graines is a "must see" with its tuscan columns and roman tiled roof and its fascinating stone mediaeval and metal 19th century grain measures.

The views from the Promenade du Chateau over the fields, forests and orchards of the Garonne Valley are spectacular.

The Church of St. Pierre, which suffered greatly during the many and various wars of the last 700 years, is impressive and its size hints at Auvillar's importance during the Middle Ages.

Throughout the year Auvillar hosts a series of colourful and lively events - Jazz festival, Fete de St Noe (Baccus), 'Paint our Village' art competition, various brocante fairs (antiques & bric a brac), Vide Greniers (French equivalent of car boot sale), Pottery & Ceramics market and Christmas fair.

The village is well served with restaurants - currently 5 - which offer a broad selection of dishes that will suit all tastes and pockets.

The local museum (accesed via the Mairie) is worth a visit as it charts the villages fascinating history, its importance as a port on the river Garonne and the rise and decline of its pottery manufacturing activities.
