Toulon's old town and historical quarter offers an abundance of squares and quaint, narrow streets. There are little, ochre, yellow and pink houses, narrow and winding streets and here set around the ancient Cathedral it the famous Provencal food market. Brimming with delicious local food and buzzing with the liveliness of the South it is one of Toulon's most charming attractions.

The Place de la Liberté is well worth a visit, there are terraces and magnificent fountains, bordered by palm trees and the Grand Hotel. This is situated half way between the old town and the train station and Porte d'Italie. To the north of the city are monuments built by order of Napoleon III and the Opera House.

Plages de Mourillon is located just outside the centre of the city and is Toulon's largest beach. The long white sands are lined with restaurants, cafes and dotted with palm trees, a welcoming place to sit and relax. This is also where Toulon's oldest fortress, Saint-Louis, is situated and was built in 1514. Here the siege of Toulon dating back to 1707 is commemorated by letting off traditional fireworks. The Mourillon hosts many events both daytime and in the evening which includes an international Jazz festival, regattas and fetes.

The Museum de la Marine, in the Place du Ingenieur-General-Monsenergue houses a large collection of figureheads and ship models, and traces the history of shipbuilding through the ages. There are many interesting educational displays throughout the museum, therefore a great place to take the children.

Public Transport:	By Plane: It is worth checking online to find out which airlines are offering the best deals at the time, but as an example, you can fly direct to direct from London City airport to Toulon with Air France which takes 1.5 hours. By Train from London: The Eurostar terminal is at St Pancras International, London. To travel to Toulon you would need to change at Paris Gare du Nord, then take the RER high-speed commuter train line D (or a taxi) to Paris Gare de Lyon. Then take the TGV to Toulon. As a guide the journey time is approximately 7 hours 10 minutes. Alternatively there is a new terminal at Ebbsfleet International. This station in Kent is just a few minutes from junction 2 of the M25, and the Bluewater shopping centre. By Car from Ashford: Travel by Eurotunnel from Ashford International, near Folkestone, Kent  to Calais. Operators such as Seafrance and P&O offer regular ferry trips across the channel, with prices ranging from around £30 for a return day trip. For example the journey from Calais to Toulon by road is 1133.9km and would take approximately 10 hours. Toulon Public Transport: Toulon Station, Gare de Toulon, is to the north of the town centre, 500 metres from Place de la Liberté. There are also plenty of local buses and a taxi rank.
