Roussillon has again been voted to be second in the category 'un des plus beau villages de France' and is one of the most beautiful and unique perched villages in the Parc Naturel du Luberon, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty in southern Provence. Roussillon is famous for its multi-hued ochre cliffs. Ochre was mined in and around the area for many years and the houses of the village are painted the red, orange and yellow ochre colours - a delightful sight.

Roussillon (Vaucluse) mini guide

The village has lots of interesting art and pottery  shops with some of the products being decorated using ochre paints.  Ochre paints can be purchased in the village or at the Conservatoire des Ochres nearby where you can also take a guided tour of the old ochre mine workings - a fascinating insight into how ochre was produced and used.  Follow also the Ochre trail in the village which takes you on a network of paths through the multi coloured ochre cliffs.  And of course walk right up to the top of the village to the view point for a lovely vista right across the Luberon valley, west to the Alpilles and north to Mont Ventoux with its bare limestone top.

There is a wide choice of cafes and restaurants for lunch or dinner in the village, including a cafe selling home made ice-creams in over twenty different flavours. There is also an excellent boulangerie selling a wide variety of home baked breads along with scrumptious croissants, brioches and patisseries. Parking is easy with a new, improved car park at the top of the village, near to the Ochre trail and 2 car parks at the bottom of the hill with numerous parking spaces along the road leading up to the village.

The small, weekly market is held on Thursday mornings from around 8.00am until 2.00pm in the centre of the village.  Stalls selling local fruit and vegetables, fish and meat  can be found alongside local fabrics, honey, soaps and souvenirs. Parking will be tricky on market days so get there early.
