Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis) mini guide

Bobigny  is an industrial suburb of Paris and its major manufacturing areas are in metal, food products and toys. Bobigny lies in the north-east of the Ile-de-France by the Canal de l'Ourcq, it is just 3 km from Paris and a quarter of an hour from Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport.

The industrial area lays mostly to the south and west of the town and dense housing lays in the centre, this where the town hall can be found. The oldest buildings in Bobigny are found in the north and northeast of the city (bordering Drancy) and were built at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 1933, on the former site of a newspaper printing press, the IUT of Bobigny was constructed. There is a sixty meter high tower dedicated to the printing industry called The Tower of Illustration. It was named after the 16 page newspaper ‘Illustration Weekly’. A new ultra modern press was founded for the paper which draws more than 200,000 copies. Next to the IUT is the Faculty of Medicine at Bobigny, also known FR Leonardo da Vinci.

Avicenna Hospital was inaugurated in March 1935 and is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Paris.

Archaeological excavations at the site of the ‘Cow at Home’ uncovered a 52 hectares area of Gallic city from around 350 BC and later abandoned around 110 AD. A necropolis of 521 tombs was discovered, it is the largest to date in Europe for this period.

Two parks of interest in Bobigny are The Park of the Shepherdess, which is situated on the north bank of the canal de l'Ourcq and Vallonné, with its many paths. The Vallonné comprises of small woods and shrubberies with many berries that birds flock to enjoy.

The underground arrived in Bobigny in 1985, the tram in 1992 the A 86 was inaugurated in 1998. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the authority set up many projects for the future regeneration of the City. Some of the tower blocks and houses have been raised and replaced with new environmentally pleasing constructions. A new ‘City on Earth’ is being developed on the banks of the canal.
