There was a Roman villa nearby ariound 400 A.D. and Charlemagne granted a band of monks title to the land where they began to construct a monastery in 791 A.D. The abbey and the village within its walls underwent centuries of construction and reconstruction, religious turmoil and warfare passing through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Revolution into modern times.
