Bayeux (Calvados) mini guide

The tiny town of Bayeux is built around the magnificent cathedral of Notre-Dame and is home of the 200 foot long Bayeux Tapestry, a world famous masterpiece, whose scenes depict the epic tale of William the Conqueror’s expedition to England in the 11th century.

The tapestry was made to commemorate the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and is believed to have been woven in England. It is displayed in a museum in the town centre. The large Norman-Romanesque Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux, consecrated in 1077, was the original home of the tapestry.

They are some excellent museums in Bayeux. Bayeux is also a useful base for exploring some of the D-DAY beaches on the Cote de Nacre.

It is a delightful town with street lined with boutiques, cafes and restaurants.
