St Martin is a port where fishermen and sailors meet in a friendly atmosphere, and you can imagine the spectacle of the sailing ships in a bygone era as they came to load up with salt and the wine.

Saint-Martin de Re is regarded as "the Capital" of the island. The beautiful houses and the private mansions consolidate this title of Capital of the island. There are many things to visit such as walks on the ramparts, the small streets which go down towards the port, or just dawdle on the quays. It is best to visit on foot. You can leave the car on the Vauban car park, at the entry to the city. This car park occupies a vast area and is very well placed.

Has Saint Martin become the new play-ground of the rich and famous? There are many luxury shops leading from the port and in the streets which go up towards the heart of the village, shopping is not for small purses! In the shops even the latest decorative fashion is painting antique chairs in Marine colours.

However rest assured, Saint Martin is not yet Saint-Tropez. Because the family-feel of the island is still strong - hire a convertible if you wish but spending time with family and friends at cafés, strolling around the port at sunset or on the beaches is better than showing off at the wheel!
