Bastia (Haute Corse)

Situated in the northeast of Corsica, at the base of Cap Corse, Bastia is the principal port of the island and also the main commercial town.

Bastia (Haute Corse) mini guide

Not only is it an important Corsican port, it is also famous for its wines.

The old port of Bastia has been left virtually unchanged for years.  Old houses painted in pastels with wrought-iron balconies add character and the Genoese citadel dominates the town.
There are many Corsican specialities, maybe the best known are figatellu (fried sausages), prisutu (smoked ham) and migliaccilou (pancakes with goat’s cheese). Good wine is also produced here.

There is a traditional market every morning from Tuesday to Sunday with stalls of cooked meats, cheeses, fish and other Corsican gastronomic specialities - the goods are sold with a typical Mediterranean welcome and banter.

The flea market operates every Sunday morning at the Place Saint Nicolas where you can find knick-knacks and furniture, some of which is local and often of good quality.

A textile market is held on the second Friday of every month, on the Place St Nicolas.

The average temperature is about 15.3 °C. The annual rainfall is around 700 mm but there are about 340 days of sunshine per year.

While imprisoned on Elba, Napoleon claimed he could find his native country by its lovely scent which comes from the wild maquis shrubs that cover much of the coast, made up of a tangle of lavender, sage, thyme and other low-growing wild herbs.
