Pouilly-sur-Sâone is a riverside village in the Cote d’Or that has a recorded history of more than a thousand years. However the human activities here are evident from long before that. There are two Phoenician barges sunk in the river, still with their amorpha jars intact.
Pouilly Sur Saone (Côte d'Or) mini guide
The Romans used to ford the Sâone here, and pieces of equipment that they lost in the waters are still found occasionally. Gold armbands and broaches have been found in the surrounding fields and not long ago the children used to trade Roman coins found in a cache for sweets at the village shop.
The village boasts a single chateau and rumour has it that the daughter of the owner, just over a hundred years ago, turned away one of her suitors; who then in frustration built a large metal tower in Paris. The suitors name was Gustave Eiffel.
The village is situated on high ground next to the course of the river and is therefore not flooded when the Sâone bursts its banks, which it does most years in March. Perhaps it is for this reason that we have found ancient arrowheads from prehistoric man here and also why this farming village came into existence as a base from which to farm the flood plains. The countryside is particularly beautiful in Spring when the yellow fields of Rape are flowering and also in September when the sunflowers are at their best.
