The D-Day Landing Beaches in Normandy were chosen by planners because they lay within range of air cover from England, and were less heavily defended.

The Normandy invasion began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air attacks and naval bombardments which were followed by the early morning amphibious landings.

Even if you have no direct link with this historic occasion, it is virtually impossible not to be deeply moved when you gaze upon beaches where thousands of British, American, Canadian, and French troops gave their lives in the space of just one day.

Today, dozens of cemeteries and monuments commemorate the event and honour those who lost their lives.
