Memorial de Caen is an imaginative museum erected in 1988 in the north side of the city, It serves as a powerful reminder of the precious and precarious nature of peace and is without a doubt the best of Normandy''s many WWII museums. It traces the "failure of peace" through galleries beginning with the end of WWI and incorporates a unique collection of WWII footage, high-tech audio-visual aids, models, and displays.

The first museum devoted to the 20th century, from the World War 2 to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and to the world of the cold war. It is a unique place with the wealth of the collection exhibited and the innovation of its presentation. It also sparks a debate on the future of the planet.
