Meteorite Museum, Rochechouart (Espace Météorite)

The meteorite of Rochechouart fell from the sky over 200 million years ago. Over 1 kilometer in diameter and weighing 6 billion tons, it eradicated in just one minute any form of life within the surrounding area.

Out of 150 incidents of this kind world wide, this is the only one in France. Today the crater has disappeared; all that remains are pieces of glazed stone that are used in the local architecture.

To understand further the impact that the meteorite had on Rochechouart, l’Espace météorite Paul Pellas, a museum in the centre of town has samples of rocks, models, photos and videos. It is the only museum of its kind in France.
