Château de Valençay
The Château de Valençay as it stands today - a subtle blend of the Renaissance and neo-classical styles - is largely the achievement of the Estampes family, who grew wealthy in the reign of Louis XIII.
Listed today as an Historic Monument, it has preserved its period furnishings, estate grounds and gardens, and remains one of the most sumptuous chateaux of the region.
The manor was praised as "one of the most beautiful on earth" by George Sand, who also noted that "no king has owned a more picturesque park".
