Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois was the parish Church of the Kings de France when the Lourve was still a royal palace. It was founded in the 12th century but has been altered many times over several centuries, and has a mixture of styles including Roman, Gothic and Renaissance.

Among the treasures preserved inside are a wooden 15th century statue of Saint Germain and a Saint-Vincent of stone carved at the same time.

The church has 78m (256 ft.) of stained glass, including rose windows from the Renaissance period.

The intricately carved church-wardens' pews are based on 17th-century Le Brun designs and were made in 1683 by François Le Mercier.

On the night of August 23, 1572, the church bell sounded the beginning of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Thousands of Protestants were killed by Catholics and this started the Wars of Religion which lasted for several centuries.
