Les Cévennes National Park

The Cévennes National Park is located in the southern France mainly in the departments of Lozère and Gard. The park was created in 1970 to preserve the typical wildlife, plants and architecture of the area.

Of all the French National Parks, the Cévennes is the only one located in a mountainous area and therefore has a unique and significant cultural heritage.

Cévennes also has a unique mission amongst national parks: the search for eco-sustainable development, concern for the protection of heritage, and ensuring the sustainability of agro-pastoral activities necessary for maintaining biodiversity and landscape.The result is that the park has experienced some of the strongest environmental developments in Europe over the last 20 years.

The astonishing diversity of landscapes in the park including Cévennes, Causses and Mont Lozère is also the result of generations of breeders and farmers living and working in the area. In the nineteenth century, the area was densely populated and much local fauna had disappeared. Today the park is once again a habitat for wild boar, deer and bighorn sheep. Vultures have returned to the gorges of the Tarn and Jonte, and beavers to the waters and rivers of the area. The Cévennes National Park has also been instrumental in rescuing the Przewalski horse.
