France’s capital has several hundred small hotels with two, one or even no stars. Some exude a quirky old-style charm, even though quite basic. Many are in traditional buildings full of character with owners who offer a personal service. Even the most budget can be perfectly adequate for bargain-hunters in search of cheap Paris. Typically, they have a bath rather than shower or washing facilities in the bedroom and stairs rather than a lift, but safety regulations are tight and cleanliness standards quite high.

The cheapest hotels in Paris tend to be in the Latin Quarter (5th arrondissement), which has the bonus of an exciting nightlife, or in the chic Marais district. The Montorgueil pedestrian district and the 10th Arrondissement near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est are also affordable.

If you prefer a more modern room with basic furnishing but good bath and shower facilities, then the French chains – notably Ibis and Kyriad - also provide cheap hotels in Paris. They tend to be in quieter neighbourhoods but with access to the Metro, although Kyriad has some hotels within the Paris city limits. Breakfast is provided, but sometimes at extra cost.

For excellent discount rates, look at chain hotels in convention and exhibition areas like Brancion and Porte de Versailles at weekends and outside event times.
