Talmont (Charente-Maritime)
Talmont is a beautiful little fortified village near Royan dating from 1284.
Talmont was built on the orders of Edward 1st of England at a time when this part of France was ruled by England. The village is incredibly pretty with tiny streets and alleys, whitewashed cottages and hollyhocks everywhere, and can only be visited on foot. It is a delightful place to stroll around on a summer’s day.
There is a town museum, set in a building in a delightful little square. The village is dominated by the Church of St Radegonde which stands high on a rocky headland above the Gironde estuary with spectacular views. The Romanesque church dates from the 12th century and was a staging post of the route of the pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.
Talmont is just 15km south of Royan and there are sandy beaches nearby.
