Home description

The villa is modern, comfortable and spacious.  Set in a large garden with mature trees and shrubs it provides the ideal ambience for sunbathing and relaxation.  The hamlet of Grillon has all necessary amenities including a general store, post office, ATM cash machine, 2 hairdressers, pharmacy, 3 boulangeries, restaurants and cafes. Only 4km west is the charming town of Grignan, dominated by the famous and imposing chateau of Adhémar de Monteil.  Its lively streets draw people into its art galleries while its cafes and restaurants provide perfect opportunities for people watching while enjoying delicious food and wine.

To the west lies the gentle small town of Nyons gateway to the Barronies mountains. This town with its bustling twice-weekly market close to the Roman bridge has provided an attractive environment for poets, artists and writers for centuries.

Grillon is just 15-20 minutes from the Autoroute del Sud, the main motorway to the south (A7).  This makes it an ideal location for exploring the area.  Avignon is to the south, the Ardeche is to the west, and both are within a 30 minute drive.  Marseille, the Med and the airports of Marseille and Nîmes are approximately 1 hour away.

The accommodation consists of:

• Sitting room (38 sq metres), light, airy and spacious with a wood burning fireplace as its centrepiece, furnished with 2 comfortable sofas, dining table and chairs seating 8, dresser and bookcase.  This room has a BBC linked TV together with a video recorder.  There are three sets of patio doors, one opening onto an east facing front terrace, a second allowing access to the rear west facing terrace, while the third opens directly onto the garden.
• Bedroom 1 (11 sq metres) with a double bed with large en-suite bathroom, fully tiled, containing shower, vanitory unit and WC.
• Bedroom 2 (13 sq metres) with twin beds.
• Bedroom 3 (11 sq metres) double bed.  Each bedroom contains a chest of drawers, 2 bedside tables and wardrobe.
• Bedroom 4 (7 sq metres) full size bunk bed (190 x 100cm) suitable for adults or children, a wardrobe and bedside table.
• Main bathroom (8 sq metres) also fully tiled, with a full size bath, and shower attachment, vanitory unit and WC.
• Separate WC tiled with small hand basin.
• Kitchen (10 sq metres) is fully equipped with all necessary utensils as well as new appliances, cooker, hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.  There is a dresser and table and chairs so that it can be used as a breakfast room.
• Rear terrace (12 sq metres) The window from kitchen opens on to this west-facing terrace as do the sitting room patio doors.  It is a wonderful afternoon sun trap, ideal for leisurely outdoor meals or just sipping the superb vins de la campagne in the early evening.
• Front terrace (23 sq metres) Accessed from patio doors from the sitting room, surrounded by shrubs, trees and pergola, covered with vines, this terrace catches the sun in the morning, and is great for quiet relaxing croissants and coffee.

There is a garage (36 sq metres) containing a table tennis table which can be folded away if the space is required for garaging a car.  There are lockable gates to the forecourt where there is ample space for 3 medium size cars.

The swimming pool has a tiled surround and is on the southwest side of villa with almost constant sunshine.  The pool is surrounded with a child safety wall as required by French law, with gates that can be locked from the outside.

The garden is a very quiet and serene 1,200 sq metres of shrubs and trees set between areas of green grass, perfect for relaxing in the shade or just sunbathing on the lawn.

There are tables and chairs for both terraces and sun loungers are provided for the garden .

About the location

Here you are in the centre of possibly the most interesting area of France, as well as being in the heart of the Provencal way of life.

To the north are the mountains of the Barronies (a secret the French try to keep to themselves). Here there is wonderful scenery, walking, climbing, kayaking  and small picturesque villages some with fabulous places to eat serving local dishes and wines. The price of these can be refreshingly reasonable.

To the west is the well-known area of the Ardeche. Rugged mountains and one of the highest gorges in Western Europe. Here you can find well-established outdoor activities for all levels of ability.

To the south you enter into the domain of the ancient Greeks, Romans and early Christians.  Here history envelops you - there are wonderful churches, temples, coliseums and ruins everywhere for you to explore.  To the east the land becomes more rugged - it's the countryside of the pre-alps containing two national parks from which you can see some of the most dramatic scenery in France. The drive to the coast around Marseille is also worth a visit, an area of extreme beauty where you will find the majority of tourists are French. 

The area is also extremely rich in culture.  Where else can one see operas, concerts, plays and artistic festivals played out under the stars, often in Roman coliseums, or listen to a concert or choir in one of the many cathedrals?  From Orange and Vaison la Romain, with its Roman remains and amphitheatres, to Avignon, which during the whole of July becomes a festival town with a multitude of plays, shows and music. These are performed every day and night during the month, many of these shows take place outside in the squares and gardens around the town and the whole place takes on a atmosphere of canival.

How to get here

Nearest airports Nimes (75 minutes) Marseille (95 minutes). Ryanair is planning a new route to Valence which if it happens is approx 60 miinutes. There are also flights from Avignon to Southampton (50 minutes).

TGV to Avignon, which is 50 minutes from the villa, TGV also stops at Montelimar (30 Minutes) and Valence (50 minutes).

By car autoroute A7 turn off at Montelimar...Calais to Montelimar approx 10 Hours.
