Traditional Charentaise House with Stunning Views of Countryside and Gironde Estuary.
Set amidst a wild spring flower meadow, in a small hamlet with a windmill, its elevated position offers panoramic views over the undulating countryside and the estuary.
The property has been recently renovated to a high standard retaining many of the beams and much of the original stonework including, for example, a large animal trough which has been converted to a worktop in the kitchen. There are high ceilings and plenty of open plan space and large windows that make the most of the views. It sleeps 10 people in 5 bedrooms and there are 2 cots available on request. Two bedrooms have stunning estuary views and freestanding baths. There are 2 comfortable lounge areas in which to relax and both have large screen TVs. At the rear of the property there is a large barn equipped with table tennis, pool and table football.
The garden extends to 5,000m2 and features a 10x4m heated swimming pool with beautiful views. The pool has an integrated roller cover for safety. Just off the rear pool entrance is a large covered and well shaded seating and dining area as well as a convenient outside shower and loo. Around the pool their are sunbeds and further chairs. At the front of the house there is a gravel drive with ample parking for 3-4 cars.
There is good WIFI with commercial quality extenders that enable reach through the thick stone walls although regrettably one master bedroom still has no signal.

- Inner hall, loo and utility/boot room: latter with ample space for coats, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board
- Large sitting room: 32m2 with 3 large sofas, TV and picture window facing west (sunset)
- Large kitchen/diner: 59m2 with extending table and chairs for 10 people. Kitchen with all the usual appliances: dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, large fridge with freezer and wine cooler integrated. Two large picture windows (south and west facing) onto pool and terrace. Locks are provided for the picture windows. Air conditioning is fitted to the this room and the large sitting room.
First floor:
- Master Bedroom 1 with estuary views: Large super king bed, freestanding bath and ensuite shower room. Air conditioning.
- Master Bedroom 2 with esturary views: Large super king bed, freestanding bath and basin in the room, plenty of space for cot or extra bed. No wifi.
- Bedroom 3: Superking double (zip and link) can be available as a twin with en suite loo and basin. Air conditioning.

- Bedroom 4: King sized bed
- Bedroom 5: Superking (zip and link) can be available as a twin, also plenty of space for an extra bed or cot.

Charente Maritime bathes in a micro-climate created by the Gulf stream making it the second sunniest area in France. It benefits from an average of 2500 hours of sunshine per year, and is proving to be a popular and ideal holiday destination, whilst retaining its unspoilt beauty.
The tiny hamlet of Puits Marteau, is set along quiet country lanes, in a tranquil rural location. Being close to the mouth of the Gironde estuary the property is just 20 minutes from the sandy cove beaches at Meschers. Numerous beaches continue from there up along the Atlantic coastline to Royan and further on to the beautiful wood-lined sands of La Palmyre and La Tremblade, (popular holiday destinations). A number of these beaches hold the coveted "Blue Flag" award for cleanliness.
The region is also popular for it's architecture and ancient port towns like La Rochelle, which is included in the itinerary of world-class cruise liners. The local town of Saintes is also noted for it's archaeological importance. The architectural interest continues with the exquisitely ornate stone and wrought iron work on the buildings at Bordeaux and Cognac.
No visit to this region would be complete without viewing some of the many vineyards which blanket the area, producing grapes not only for the local market, but also for the world-famous brands of cognac. Pineau des Charentes is a local speciality produced by adding sugar to the first pressing of the cognac grape. Nectar of the gods!!

Brie-sous-Mortagne:
This is your nearest village just a couple of minutes drive form the house. You will be able to buy wonderful fresh French bread from the 'boulangerie' and there is also a bar/restaurant/general store for your convenience.
Mortagne:
The village of Mortagne just 5 Kms away is set up on white chalk cliffs overlooking the ancient village fishing port and the Gironde estuary. Today it has a beautiful marina with some superb yachts moored there, but you can also find amongst these local fishing boats bringing in their catch of fish. A nice place to stop off for a relaxing drink and a meal in one of the café / restaurants that look out onto the marina. The village has several small shops including a boulangerie, general store and of course the local bars / cafés where you can quench your thirst.
Places of interest:
Royan:
One of the most modern towns in the area, having been heavily bombed by the allied forces in World War II. It is now a popular seaside resort with long sandy beaches and a separate lido. Many sea trips are available from here and it is from this port that you can take the ferry over to the Medoc Peninsula, where you can spend the day luxuriating in some of the worlds most famous of French chateaux - Chateau Lafitte and Chateau Mouton Rothschild. What about a day out to visit La Palmyre Zoo which has over 1600 different animals in large environmentally friendly surroundings? If you are feeling active there is a school at Royan for surfing, body boarding, long boarding etc.
Meschers:
Just 20 minutes away from Puits Marteau this is where you will find your nearest beach. An amazing place to visit are the grottos carved into the cliffs. These are open to the public. The sound and light shows in the summer season really add to the atmosphere. Enjoy a visit to Tina's Café on the Plage des Nonnes. Tina (from Chicago) sings in the evenings and invites other musicians to jam along. Can you play?
Talmont:
Probably one of the oldest preserved port towns on the estuary. It's pedestrianised streets are lined with hollyhocks in the summer. It is a charming and very quaint village with plenty of gift shops and bars etc. The tiny picturesque church of St. Radegonde was built in 1904 on a spit of land overlooking the Gironde. The apse of the church was designed in the shape of the prow of a ship. This was quite appropriate as the nave has unfortunately since fallen into the water!
Les Antilles de Jonzac:
A touch of the exotic in tropical surroundings all year round. 10,000m² dedicated to pleasure and well being. This park offers fun, excitement, entertainment, and relaxation all in one. Something for every member of the family. There are water slides into the lagoon, toboggan rides, indoor and outdoor beaches, swimming pools, jacuzzi, a beauty salon, restaurants etc. etc. (An ideal place to visit on one of those rare rainy days, maybe.)

How to get to 2 Puits Marteau
Situated in the department of Charente Maritime in South West France, this property is easily accessible by both air and by car.
By air:
- Both Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports are approximately 1hr 15mins drive away.
Poitiers is about 1 hour 45 minutes - Limoges and Bergerac approximately 2 hrs away.
- Main roads connect these airports to the local town of Brie-sous-Mortagne and you should have a pleasant carefree journey.
By car:
- St. Malo is just a 4.5 hour drive to the house and 6.5 hours from Le Havre or Caen
- Calais is some 7 to 8 hours drive. If you go via Boulogne, Le Mans and Tours, it is motorway all the way apart from going around Rouen. The new roads make it a more pleasant journey and on the way there are many excellent leisure areas with cafe/restaurant facilities where you can stop for refreshments.

Beautiful house in secluded setting. Amazing views over the estuary with a great place to eat in the evening. Large heated pool with an efficient cover to keep the heat in overnight.
The kitchen facilities were brilliant even for the largest party. The games room was also well equipped and a fun place to be when the sun finally went down.
The owners were extremely helpful , gave sound advice about every aspect of the holiday and even bought an extra high chair for young twins in the party.

We stayed here for 2 weeks during June and had a fantastic time! The house is huge and in a lovely secluded area so you'll be sure of lots of peace and quiet. The local shops are only a 5-10 min walk away.
The house has absolutely everything you need for your stay, the kitchen is fully stocked with pans and cooking utensils, there are enough plates and cutlery for the biggest family, and a large utility room with washing machine and tumble drier meant we could get all of our washing done before we came home! There is a large games rooms with pool table and ping pong which kept the older kids happy (husbands!) and a gorgeous swimming pool with a lovely grassy area and shady tree to enjoy when the weather is hot! The pool can only be accessed via the security gate so VERY safe for anyone with very young children. We traveled with 2 year old twins and they had an amazing time as the garden is as big as a park with lovely views onto rolling fields and a local dairy farm. There is a small orchard which is nice to visit in the morning and help yourself to fresh cherries from the trees. The local SuperU supermarket is only a 10 min drive away so you can stock up on all of your necessities and also fill up on petrol. The local town of St Dizant is nice and we'd recommend a visit to Port Maubert and the Port of Mortagne-sur-Gironde for a nice chilled lunch or dinner. The local pizzeria which is a 5 min drive away may look like a shack on the side of the road but it's run by the friendliest family and the pizza's are AMAZING! Bordeaux is less than an hour away and there are a number of local beaches to choose from. The house has a huge black folder full of ideas so you wont be bored for a moment unless of course you want to relax in the peace and quiet of the lovely surrounding area. What an amazing place to stay. (Wow! is what the occupants of the car said in unison as we realised that we had arrived at our holiday destination.)
The owners are very helpful and friendly. They provided us with information to keep the 6 teenagers we took with us happy and stayed in contact with us from the time we first inquired about the property until we got home. I think the listing actually underplays the facilities and stunning views this property provides.
We went with another family, but the house was huge and we had plenty of rooms, beds, bathrooms and living spaces to keep everyone content. The views are beautiful, we ate outside and watched the wildlife, views of the Gironde and the sun setting over the sunflower fields as heady scents of lavender wafted over from the pool. We found the house beautifully clean, the kitchen has everything you need, there is an efficient barbecue, the furniture and decor are to hotel standard, the games room was a huge hit with our children and the pool is fantastic.
Brie is a tiny village but we loved the village shop, the bakery and the friendly baker there. Gemozac is nearby and handy for food shopping. Our favourite trips were to Pons (small medieaval town views from the tower are worth the climb) and Cognac (the brandy distilleries are well worth visiting) and the kids went kayaking and thoroughly enjoyed that too. The beaches are beautiful but most days we had to drag everyone away from 'our private pool'.
We would all recommend this gorgeous place particularly for large families or families holidaying together. Definitely 5 stars!Guest rating:
