SW France Holiday Cottages with Pool between Lot & Dordogne Rivers
Mike and Sylvia Johnson would like to welcome you their Hen House and Corn Corner cottages where you will always be able to relax and unwind in peace and tranquillity whilst having free access to our grounds and swimming pool. We have a 9m x 6m swimming pool, which guests share with ourselves and can use at anytime. The pool is fenced to conform with current safety regulations. Guests are welcome to wander in our 1.3 hectares provided they respect the privacy of ourselves and any other guests. There is a small pond where, in springtime, you might catch sight of nesting moorhens, if you’re quiet.
The cottages are situated equally 20 miles south of the Dordogne river and Bergerac, and 20 miles north of the Lot river and Villeneuve sur Lot, in quiet countryside about one and a half miles from Villeréal.
Villeréal is one of several well-known ancient bastide towns in the area, having all amenities including boulangerie, patisserie, charcuteries and two supermarkets supplying all everyday needs, as well as an excellent Saturday morning market throughout the year. There are even four estate agents if you are property hunting. Whilst maintaining its historic character Villeréal offers everything one needs for life in the 21st century, but at a more leisurely pace.
As well as the all year Saturday market, in summer a market is held on Wednesday mornings and on Monday evenings there is a local producers food, wine and craft market held under the halle, Villeréal's ancient open, covered market place, where you can enjoy both hot and cold locally produced food and wine, enjoy live music and even dance if you wish.
If you don't fancy using the BBQ, cooking for yourself or having a perfectly ready prepared meal from the charcuterie then you can always eat out at one of a wide variety of restaurants, which exist in Villeréal and the surrounding area.
In, and within a short distance of Villeréal, you will be able to sample local food and wines, discover Lot et Garonne's beautiful countryside and interesting chateaux or stroll through a market a day, all within a few kilometres of our pretty spot of heaven.
The tourist office in Villeréal has up to date information on all local events and attractions and a file of leaflets from them is kept in the gite. If you fancy a flutter you might be able to take in the races at our local hippodrome with its horse trotting events.
Finally if there is anything else that you would like to know or discuss with us, you are welcome to contact us via the enquiry form or telephone and we look forward to meeting you perhaps in the near future.
A bientot !

The friendly inhabitants of Lot-et-Garonne welcome visitors to numerous events and celebrations throughout the year. You can enjoy bodegas, medieval fairs, jazz, blues or classical concerts, craft, art, or pottery fairs, (Bernard Palissy was born in St. Avit, a few kilometers away, which holds a major pottery fair every August). You can visit many kinds of museums or go down grottes or caves, such as the well known ones of Lastournelle or Fontirou.
Lot et Garonne with its numerous bastide villages and ancient halles or covered markets, such as Villereal, Monpazier or Pujols, is steeped in history due to its association with the Templars and Huguenots. So, within a few miles of our very peaceful spot you can discover some interesting chateaux both here and in the neighbouring Dordogne such as the very impressive Château Biron, only 5 kms away and well worth a visit, Bonaguil, Duras, Beynac, or Milandes, furnished just as it was when owned by the late Josephine Baker. A falconry display is included in the visit to Chateau Milandes.
This is an area famous for its duck, (confit and magret de canard, and foie gras), prunes, (a world famous store sells prunes from Agen, the “capital” of the department), strawberries and walnuts, and here is baked the tourtiere, a delicious Armagnac brandy laced apple pie covered in a kind of flaky pastry of which the recipe is a closely guarded secret. Buzet, in the south of the department, produces white, rosé and rich red wine, and as well as being able to visit both large and small family run vineyards, you can also visit Armagnac, prune and cheese producers, and you are only a short drive from the famous St. Emillion village and vineyards.
For garden enthusiasts a visit to the Latour-Marliac water lily gardens at Le Temple-sur-Lot is a must. You can stroll through the 2.5 hectare gardens which were established in 1870 by Bory Latour-Marliac and the gardens house France’s national water lily collection. The museum holds Claude Monet’s invoices for water lilies bought there and seen in his famous paintings.
For the children there's Walibi theme park, just outside of Agen, about an hour's drive, and within half an hour's drive, go-karts and animal / nature / adventure parks.
Set in walking, fishing and cycling countryside, it's only a short drive to golf, boat trips or canoeing on the Lot or Dordogne rivers.
There are several lakes, which have been developed for swimming and simple water sports.
If you love horses, then many stables offer horse riding, or if you just fancy a flutter you might be able to take in the races at one of the hippodromes with their horse trotting events.
