Brantome (Dordogne)
Brantome is known as The Venice of the Perigord. Set on the banks of the Dronne river, it is picturesque and delightful to visit with its small shops, restaurants and cafes, including one Michelin starred restaurant. It has a colourful market every Friday.
Boat trips are available on the tranquil river Dronne which is a delight. Kayak and canoe facilities abound on the banks of the river. There are caves dating from pre-historic times and beautiful medieval Abbey buildings.
A monastic community for over 100 years, the Abbey was founded by Charlemagne in 769. Bell Tower, Abbey and monastic caves open to visit. Market Day on Friday (and Wednesday’s in summer). The Abbey buildings are used for Art exhibitions in the summer. There are many lovely walks available in the neighbourhood. There are interesting parks and gardens along the river bank.
