Dax (Landes)
Dax, on the left bank of the Adour River, is well known as a spa resort, specialising in thermal springs & mud treatment for rheumatism since Roman times. It is also a market town and former bishopric.
Dax lies 142 km southwest of Bordeaux and 80 km north of the Pyrenees frontier with Spain.
Dax calls itself 'La Premiere Station de Pelotherapie' or 'First in Hot Mud Pie Cures'! Originally mud was dug along the river, today, the mud is scientifically gathered and mixed with hot water.
The Fontaine Chaude, (hot fountain), is right in the heart of the old city, built at the beginning of the 19th century. In Gascon it is called Lou Bagn Bourren, the Boiling Bath. Rumours has it that in the past housewives used to find it handy for cooking hardboiled eggs and washing sheets!
The Thermes Borda would be great experience for spas enthusiasts.
A place worth visiting is Dax Cathedral which was started in the 17th century but not finished until the end of 19th century. Its appearance is reminiscent of Roman and Gothic styles.
