Guide to Holidays in French Farmhouses
A farmhouse is traditionally known as a building that serves as a primary residence in a rural or agricultural setting. Historically farmhouses where often combined with space for animals called a Housebarn. Other farmhouses may be connected to one or more barns, built to form a courtyard, or with each farm building separate from each other. Today many of these stunning buildings have been converted to create a quintessential French experience. Being typically situated in the countryside they allow you to immerse yourself in all that the French countryside and culture has to offer. Many Farmhouses also offer the option of out buildings or smaller Gîtes attached that allow for groups to stay together while maintaining your own space. If you are looking for authentic French holiday or a genuine home from home, why not rent a Farmhouse for your next trip.
Where do you find Farmhouses?
Farmhouses are a common feature of the French Countryside; many are located in the South of France and South East (the Rhone Alps) and South West too. However, they can be all over France with many in Central and Northern locations too.
What is included in Farmhouse accommodation?
Farmhouse accommodation can vary widely in capacity with some sleeping 2-4 guests offering intimate getaways for couples; to those capable of sleeping which are 12 perfect for large friend and family holidays. Some farmhouses may also have added Gîtes to allow for more guests to stay in separate accommodation, these are just as quintessentially French maintaining their rustic charm. Many of these properties are self-catering, however, some do offer a bed and breakfast service this varies from property to property so you will need to check when booking what is offered within the package.
Many of the French Farmhouses follow a traditional decorative theme, with many featuring their authentic stonewalls and charming exposed wooden beams. Some will also have kept the traditional fire places and log burner ovens. Most farmhouses offer fully fitted kitchens, en-suite bathrooms, or more than one bathroom (depending upon the size of the property) English Satellite TV, CD player, DVD player, Internet Access and family board games. Although many owners will also provide the basic items such as toilet rolls, salt and pepper, washing up liquid and tea and coffee it is not always included. Many owners offer optional extras such as Linen (if not standard) and towels. However, it is best to check with the property owners what is included when booking. However, if you do forget to pack some essentials then at least you have a reason to visit the local shops and try a few French delicacies along the way!
One of the most fantastic features of many of the farmhouses in France is the gardens and land that surrounds the properties. Many have large gardens or acres of land-attached, which are perfect for family activities and relaxing in the sun. Many farmhouse properties have access to their own private or shared swimming pools with sun terraces or patio areas for breakfast in the morning sunrise or dinner watching the sunset. It is also common for these properties to have BBQ areas perfect for evenings in with a beautiful bottle of French wine.
