Les Vans (Ardeche)
Les Vans is a small town which nestles at the foot of the Cevennes, close to the valley of the Chassezac and the prehistoric Bois de Paiolive, a site of national interest.
At the heart of the town is the ancient market place with its arches , stone fountain, small shops, restaurants and cafes. An exploration of the surrounding cobbled streets leads to the 17th century church of St. Pierre, a covered medieval wash house and a temple with a columned portico.
Close by there is the small but very interesting museum of local life and a museum dedicated to the life and work of Leopold Ollier, the father of orthodpedic surgery and a son of Les Vans. A large open square surrounded by elegant buildings housing shops, restaurants and pavement cafes is named after him. A bronze statue of Leopold Ollier gazes down on the numerous markets, festivals, tournaments, sales and other activities which take place at his feet.
The local market takes place on Saturday and in the summer an additional evening market is held on Tuesday evening. There are specialist markets and a wide range of other events taking place from Easter to Autuumn
