Megève is popular for both winter sports and summer activity holiday activities.
Dating back to 1913 Megeve started its development in the 1920s when Baronne Noémie de Rothschild opened the first major hotel in 1921, after becoming disenchanted with St. Moritz as a skiing resort. By the 1950s Megève was one of the most popular ski resorts in Europe. The skiing area also includes the Combloux, Cote 2000, and Les Contamines resorts. Megève is also a popular summer holiday destination.
The town centre is pedestrianised and has a well preserved medieval centre with narrow cobbled streets, tastefully restored buildings and a picturesque church. Megeve is an authentic French ski resort that is rich in tradition and history, and has retained its rustic charm. Horse-drawn sleighs add to the atmosphere in winter.
Other winter activities available include ice-skating, indoor swimming, bowling, indoor tennis, mono-skiing, paragliding, snowboarding, tobogganing, sleigh riding, hot air balloon rides and curling. There is also a beauty farm, climbing wall, sports centre, museum, French courses and a cinema.
Nightlife is varied, with bars, discos, a casino, a piano bar and a selection of clubs. Renowned for its gastronomy there are a variety of different restaurants.
