Perillos (Pyrenees-Orientales)
Ancient village that was abandoned during the middle of last century, it is now being restored under a grant aided scheme by local artisans and volunteers from all over Europe during the Summer months. Well worth a visit! Atmospheric!
In the heart of the Cathar region, Perillos is thought by some to have religious significance. Indeed, it is believed to be a possible site for the burial of a holy grail, This in itself has aroused great interest since the publishing of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Certainly, in a cave quite close to Périllos, there are crosses and other religious symbols etched into a number of the rocks within. A plaque on a wall in the village commemorates a pilgrimage by Saint Patrick from Périllos to Ireland in the twelfth century.
