St Emilion (Gironde)
Saint-Émilion is a small town near Bordeaux, France that is known for the eponymous wine region that surrounds it.
Saint-Émilion's history goes back to prehistoric times and the village has fascinating Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets. The Romans planted vineyards in what was to become Saint-Émilion as early as the 2nd century AD.
The village was listed by UNESCO in 1999 as a World Heritage Site for it's superb historic vineyard landscape, which has survived intact and is still in activity today, producing world famous wines from a multitude of prestigious wine estates.
The St Emilion Tourist Office is staffed with helpful multi-lingual staff, and is located in the town centre next to the Monolithic Church tower.
