Located on the south coast between Marseille and St.Tropez the picturesque, diverse city of Toulon is full of ancient fountains, public gardens, colourful daily markets, long sandy beaches and also a traditional fishing harbour. Toulon has an ancient fishing heritage and is the venue for many summer evening events.
Toulon's old town and historical quarter offers an abundance of squares and quaint, narrow streets. There are little, ochre, yellow and pink houses, narrow and winding streets and here set around the ancient Cathedral it the famous Provencal food market. Brimming with delicious local food and buzzing with the liveliness of the South it is one of Toulon's most charming attractions.
The Place de la Liberté is well worth a visit, there are terraces and magnificent fountains, bordered by palm trees and the Grand Hotel. This is situated half way between the old town and the train station and Porte d'Italie. To the north of the city are monuments built by order of Napoleon III and the Opera House.
Plages de Mourillon is located just outside the centre of the city and is Toulon's largest beach. The long white sands are lined with restaurants, cafes and dotted with palm trees, a welcoming place to sit and relax. This is also where Toulon's oldest fortress, Saint-Louis, is situated and was built in 1514. Here the siege of Toulon dating back to 1707 is commemorated by letting off traditional fireworks. The Mourillon hosts many events both daytime and in the evening which includes an international Jazz festival, regattas and fetes.
The Museum de la Marine, in the Place du Ingenieur-General-Monsenergue houses a large collection of figureheads and ship models, and traces the history of shipbuilding through the ages. There are many interesting educational displays throughout the museum, therefore a great place to take the children.
