The climb to reach La Forteresse Royale, built in 1253 in Najac in the Aveyron, is well worth it for the magnificent views.  The fortress is considered a masterpiece of 13th century military architecture and was never taken in battle.

We scaled it on a very hot day in mid-summer and would recommend going early in the day if it is also hot when you visit, as it is quite a steep climb up.
