As Valentine’s Day approaches, our thoughts turn to hearts, flowers and spring. France is to me the ideal destination for a romantic break.

France is to me the ideal destination for a romantic break.

I have very fond memories of an early spring wedding anniversary spent in the Dordogne. England was grey and damp when we left, but as we reached Limoges on the drive through France the sun came out with a gentle, healing warmth and our spirits were lifted.

Along the meandering river we saw lush pastures, mimosas in full, fluffy bloom, dramatic rocks and mouth watering chateaux. Romance was definitely in the air.

The village and our welcoming B&B were just going about their business as usual – but we felt they must have sensed our togetherness vibes and made a special effort.

A stroll through the park, a chat to the market stall sellers of local veg, a browse round fascinating shops. Then long, lazy lunches in the sunshine, gorgeous dinner with a polished table, crisp white linen, sweet-smelling flowers, delectable food and wine - and the bill didn't break the mood!

In fact, our mood became quite euphoric that weekend and I forever associate France with contentment and love.
