Firewalls

WinXP has its own built-in firewall that can be enabled or disabled. More in depth info can be found by searching Microsoft's website or here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/howto/homenet/icf.asp

To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall:

Open Network Connections (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double–click Network Connections.)
Click the Dial–up, LAN or High–Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. This disables the firewall, your computer and network are then vulnerable to intrusions.

Notes:
You must be logged on to your computer with an owner account in order to complete this procedure.

You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing.

ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer.

Zone Alarm & Zone Alarm Pro

There are a few different versions and yours may differ slightly, so please check the website or manufacturer's documentation. This is the most common solution:

To fix this in ZoneAlarm Pro v3.x:

Under "Privacy" Heading
" 3rd Party Cookies"
Uncheck "Remove Private Header Info."
Apply.
or you can try
Open Zone Alarm Pro by double clicking on its icon is the system tray.
Click on "Privacy"
Slide the "Cookie Control" to off.

McAfee Privacy Service

Right-click the red "M" icon by your system clock.
Click "Privacy Service."
Click "Options."

Enter each website address from which you would like to allow cookies.
Click "Add."
Once completed, close the window.

Ad-Blocking Software:

There are quite a few pieces of software being used to stop all the annoying 'pop-ups'. Some ISP's now include this type of software in their connection bundle; Some browsers now have built-in pop-up suppression. The problem is, some of these do this by stripping header and url info. So, if you are using something like this, try disabling it & see if that enables you to login. If so, you can then check the software for any advanced configuration options, or check the website of the manufacturer for more info.

Inaccurate Date And Time:

If your computer's date and time are incorrectly set this could well be the cause of your login difficulties.

On most windows computers you can adjust the date and time by following these instructions:
Click the Windows "Start" button.
Click "Settings"
Click "Control Panel"
Double click "Date and Time"
Click the "Time Zone" tab
Adjust the Time Zone if it is incorrect by selecting the correct zone in the drop down menu and then hitting "Apply".
Click the "Date & Time" tab
Confirm the date and time are correct and adjust if neccessary.
Click "Apply"
Click "OK"
