Monpazier (Dordogne)
Monpazier is the best preserved and the most beautiful of the Bastide towns.
Monpazier was created in 1284 by the English King Edward I on 53 hectares of land granted by the Compte de Biron. Monpazier today stands within those same 53 hectares and is the smallest commune in France.
Entering the town through one of the many arched gateways in the stone walls, all roads lead to a magnificent market square. The Halle and arcades around the edge of the square are a highlight. The town is laid out in a grid system typical of the bastide. Its medieval buildings seem almost unchanged since the town was built.
Today you will find lots of very good restaurants of different prices and interesting shops selling local produce and wines, pottery, jewellery, antiques and linens as well as clothes. Day to day requirements are served by three bakers, a pharmacy, butcher, two small supermarkets and a post office amongst other shops. Market day is Thursday morning.
