Rocamadour (Lot)
The spectacular medieval town of Rocamadour is built into a vertical limestone cliff face. In the middle ages Pilgrims on their way to Santiago di Compestela in Spain would stop here and ascend the 216 steps on their knees to the shrine of Our Lady at the top of the plateau.
Rocamadour is situated atop a rocky plateau overlooking the Alzou Valley. It receives 1.5 million visitors per year so it is worth going early or late in July or August to avoid the crowds.
Rocamadour is also famouse for its cheese of the same name. It is a delicious goat's milk cheese that melts in the mouth so be sure to try some whilst you are there. You can also get it in cheese shops throughout the area and in larger supermarkets throughout France but it is not easy to find in the UK.
