Valence d'Agen (Tarn-et-Garonne)
Valence d'Agen (also referred to as Valence) is a compact market town, and as such a local centre of activity. It has the full range of shops, hotels and bars/restaurants that one would expect, and which make excellent locations from which to watch 'local life go by' and hosts an excellent market every Tuesday and a Farmers' market every Saturday.
Valence d'Agen is a practical and thoroughly pleasant market town - rather than a particularly beautiful one, although its floral displays are spectacular, and the town is rightly proud of its two lavoirs and of its fountains.
There is a wide choice of foodstores and other shops in the town, including two supermarkets (Casino & Intermarché). Valence has a Gendarmerie and boasts a very good (second division) Rugby team.
It has hosted the World Roller Blading Championships fairly recently and has a properly lively, community life. The canal 'Entre Deux Mers' runs through the town linking Bordeaux with Toulouse and the Canal du Midi.
Every summer it holds a two week (8-10 performances) Son et Lumière called 'Au Fil de l'Eau - Une Histoire' which tells the story of the river and canal since the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The setting is the canal port in the town and some 400 members of the town take part in an extraordinarily professional and entertaining production. If you are here at the end of July/early August it is a must see.
