This lovingly refurbished chartreuse dating back to c.1740 is located just outside the village of Mensignac between Périgueux, the ancient town, and capital of the region, and picturesque Brantôme (both 15-20 minutes away). The setting is utterly peaceful but only a few minutes away from the village shop, one of the best for bread in the region
The building is orientated east-west and is 34m long. There are two pavilions, added in the 19th C, and most rooms are dual aspect, making the chartreuse very light and open. On the ground floor, there are three large reception rooms and one bedroom, each with fireplace and wood floors (some original), plus one bathroom. The 8m long country-style kitchen is fitted with solid wood de Kercoet designer furniture and cabinets, stone floor and a Jotul wood-burning stove.
Staircases at either end of the building access the upper floors. Key features are the ancient oak beams and two large open areas (library/study/dressing area) in addition to the three bedrooms and bathroom. A mezzanine level leads to an impressive vaulted master bedroom and en-suite.
Under the house: a large wine cellar and store room (including laundry, boiler, oil tanks for the central heating and pump etc for the swimming pool) and a garden room featuring an original bread oven.
The long south façade of the house benefits from maximum light all year round and looks onto the main garden, defined by an old stone wall beyond which stretch fields and woods. The garden contains specimen trees including walnut, hazelnut, yew, lime, persimmon, cherry and 150-year old box. In one corner of the garden, there are three large raised vegetable beds, and herbs, lavender, wisteria, vines, and roses abound. The recently renovated swimming pool measures 5x10m.
Outbuildings include a large barn (160m2), woodshed, storage rooms and a newly covered carport for four cars (60m2). The barn is used for dry secure storage at present.
The owner is a professional photographer and he has photographed the house over many years, through all seasons. Please look at our website and see the results for yourselves!
