Le Manoir - Cottage & Gite in 4 Acre Grounds of a 350 year Old Manor House
Le Manoir offers a stunning 3 Bedroomed Cottage & a lovely 2 bedroomed Gite for rent in its spacious 4 acre grounds. We are situated in sunny Charente Maritime amidst a wealth of vineyards, sunflowers and rolling countryside, neighboring historic towns nearby like Jonzac, Pons and Montendre offer typical French market town life.
The traditional buildings on the site create a beautiful setting for a relaxing holiday. The uninhabited chateau 500m down the lane adds an inspiring backdrop and with WIFI Broadband Internet, you can stay in touch and share your experiences with family & friends.
Holidaying at Le Manoir is all about having loads of family things to do in the safe environment of our huge grounds, we frequently hear from parents that they were suprised that they actually had some relaxation themselves and found they needed to go and find what the kids were doing when they had finished their reading and wanted some interaction. Le Manoir tries to turn the "Mum I'm bored" holiday on its head.
But when you are ready to explore the area, just hop in the car for a huge variety of fun, exploring and sight-seeing. We are only 30 minutes from the fabulous family friendly golden atlantic beaches at Royan and only 15 minutes from the quaint fishing ports on the massive Gironde estuary. The area is steeped in history and has a range of good quality family tourist attractions, several are world class.
The accommodation is very well equipped including antique furniture, dishwashers, satellite TVs and WIFI broadband. Le Manoir provides an ideal base for a family holiday and for exploring the South of France. The 4 acre grounds offer plenty of space to relax and unwind and with lots to keep the children (and adults!) entertained.
Besides the 10m by 5m beautiful saltwater pool, both the Cottage & the Gite have their own large patios with big barbecues and hardwood table and chairs so you can enjoy outdoor living in the sunny weather to the full.
In The Cottage you will enjoy a very large living area with a high spec Ikea kitchen at one end, lots of comfy sofas and seats at the other and a large oak dining table seating up to 8 in between. There is a superb hardwood staircase leading to a galleried landing lit by a large chandelier.
Beautiful Charente stone is on show on at least one wall of every room, all of the internal doors are solid oak as is the floor upstairs and many of the window sills. The original oak beams - over 100 years old - are on show in most rooms and bathrooms.
Unusually, there is one bathroom for every bedroom. All are finished to a very high standard.
In addition, there is a BBQ loo downstairs so Dad can spend his time looking after the food.
There is also a separate Utility room with exclusive washing machine.
Details of each room are as follows:
- Bedroom 1 (13m2) - master room overlooking the grounds, fields and forest, with king sized double bed, antique wardrobe, chest of drawers and door to ensuite shower room with hydromassage shower cubicle and victorian style WC and sink. Solid oak floor boards and doors, exposed stonework.
- Bedroom 2 (15m2) - with two single beds and two stone windows overlooking the grounds. If you wish to sleep 7 we can provide a folding bed at additional charge. Large antique wardrobe & chest of drawers.. Solid oak floor boards and exposed stone work.
- Bedroom 3 (14m2) - on the ground floor, with full disabled access. 2 single beds (can be made up as a double), antique wardrobe and chest of drawers, huge stone window to the grounds. 90cm solid oak door to an ensuite wet room with top quality toilet, wash basin and walk in shower with seat.
- Main Bathroom (9m2) - Upstairs - Unusually large and luxurious with huge walk in shower, free standing victorian style bath, twin hand basins set in teak and a victorian style WC.
- Huge living area downstairs ( 41m2) At one end there is a fully fitted, high quality IKEA hush-close kitchen, in the centre, there is a dining area with an oak table. Then there is a large lounge area with 2 comfy sofas, UK Satellite TV, DVD Game Console (if requested) etc. This part of the room extends to the full height of the barn creating a very airy and light feeling. Looking up, you can see the galleried landing and the exposed oak beams above. French doors lead to Patio on one side and access to your car the other.
- Utility room to the side of the kitchen area (5m2) with downstairs toilet - handy for BBQ's! , washing machine and sink.
Outside
The Cottage French doors open onto a large patio overlooking more than 2 acres of grass trees and shrubs. In the grounds you will find:
- Large Patio for sole use of Cottage with 8 seater hardwood table, chairs, sun parasole and planters.
- Large Charcoal Barbecue.
- Salt Water Swimming pool (shared but, if possible, we always try to let you have the pool to yourself if that is what you want) - 10mx5m with large steps to side, diving board, shallow end 1 metre deep, deep end 2.3m (8ft).

Set in gently rolling countryside and surrounded by woodland, apple orchards, sunflowers and vineyards yet only a short drive to the coast. The local lanes are a delight for a quiet stroll or a family cycle ride when you can spot lots of interesting wildlife including huge birds of prey circling the woodland. When you are bored with watching the sun go down over your BBQ, there are plenty of good restaurants within a short drive.
There are a wealth of pretty villages and fishing harbours to be explored on the nearby massive Gironde Estuary, 15 minutes by car. There are cycling paths and fishing along much of the estuary shore. The fabulous golden family-friendly beaches at Royan and St Georges are little more than half an hour away. You have a choice of sophisticated and safe town beaches, cornish coves with superb rock pools and completely wild Atlantic surf. If you bring a fishing rod you could have some really fresh fish for the BBQ!
Royan, St Georges and Meschers offer everything you would expect from good seaside resorts. There is a world class zoo just north of Royan at La Palmyre.
There are a wide range of tourist attractions for adults and children for example, the aquarium at La Rochelle is superb, you can become a prehistoric man and try to spear a wild boar at the Paleosite near Saintes, you can go boating on the river Charente or the sea at Royan, there are caves to explore and loads of the usual seaside entertainments like mini-golf. We have a superb Go-Kart track and paint-balling less than 5 minutes by car.
You will see from our guest book that other guests have enjoyed such things as, the eating in the street night market, kayaking with some exciting white water flumes, Gardens of the World by electric boat and jet ski.
There is so much to explore and the history is extraordinarily rich. The nearby town of Saintes offers Roman arches, amphitheatre and churches to explore and a plethora of chateaux and restaurants are waiting to be discovered. Jonzac (10 minutes) has a lovely Chateau and historic walks through the medeival walled town.
Wide choice of lovely restaurants in old market towns, in the country, at fishing harbours, overlooking the sea or near to beaches.
Cognac, Rochefort and Ile D’oleron are all within easy driving distance, with La Rochelle and Ile de Rey further up the coast. Cognac has some surprisingly entertaining visits at the headquarters of brands like Remy Martin.
Heading south, Arcachon with it’s famous Pyla sand dune and beaches are a must to visit and Bordeaux offers chic French city life.
The wildlife of the area is unbelievable - a tribute to the traditional farming methods in use. You will see lots of very large birds of prey as you drive around. There are some very good nature reserves with english speaking guides.
- There are a wide variety of activities for all ages within easy reach of Le Manoir for example:

Magnificent stay in a superb setting and with Tony the owner to help us get the most from our holiday. A beautiful property superbly finished and equipped. And sparkling clean.
Guest rating:
A property to recommend. Superb accomodation and facilities and all very clean. Outstanding hospitality and very useful local tips - like restaurants. Tony is aways available if you need anything yet is very discreet.
Guest rating:
Rural cottage and gite with lovely clean well maintained pool shared between the 2 properties. Ideal for 3 generations(we were aged 7 to 91!). The property’s own grounds were beautiful and cycling around the local lanes and villages was very enjoyable. Very reasonable cycle hire from the owner! Many interesting towns within easy reach by car SAINTES, Jonzac, beaches around Royan and the smaller ports along the Gironde estuary. Tony was a very welcoming and knowledgeable host who introduced us to many new places in the area --even though we had visited Jonzac before on several occasions. Both Cottage and Gite were well equipped with everything we needed.
Guest rating:
Excellent!! I recommend this place. Great accommodation, loads to do for everyone, beautiful grounds and delightful swimming pool.

A great holiday, just wish we had been staying longer! My family and I spent a wonderful weeks holiday in Tony’s delightful Cottage which provides everything you need and more! Rural, tranquil and luxurious with three bathrooms and open plan kitchen/dining/living space. We loved the traditional stonework, floors, ancient beams and oak doors. I am a wheelchair user and this was my first holiday abroad so I was delighted with the accessibility of my bedroom and en-suite wet room, the Cottage worked wonderfully for us. The grounds are extensive and Tony has organised so many things for young and old guests to enjoy if they have had enough sun and lounging around the superb pool. As Tony explained to us, the area is very interesting with many beautiful beaches, attractions, restaurants and a lot of history. So much so that we really want to go back for longer to enjoy the things we did not have time to visit. Tony, thank you for being a fantastic host and providing a first class, wheelchair accessible holiday cottage.

PERFECT TRANQUIL GETAWAY
Travelling with a wheelchair can prove to be challenging when trying to find places to stay that have a bit of charm and atmosphere - we now need look no further! Tony has made a spot of paradise in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of his glorious home. The cottage is delightful. Beautifully finished with every possible need catered for. Most importantly for us the accessibility was excellent with a superb wheel-in shower room and plenty of space for a wheelchair to move around. There are plenty of activities in the grounds of the cottage - perfect if you have children who need to let off a bit of steam, or you can simply read a book in the shade of the trees with a cold glass of wine by your side. Tony takes great care to ensure that every aspect of your stay is perfect and our holiday was a total joy, we only wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended!Guest rating:
Beautiful cottage in lovely grounds and countryside. This was our second visit having been in the Gite previously. The Cottage is luxuriously decorated with modern facilities, yet it has the appearance of much older property with oak beams. It has been very sensitively decorated. Grounds are extensive with a huge swimming pool, evenings spent playing boules and sitting outside. Close to the famous wine areas of France, a visit to St Emillion is a must. Local small towns are pretty with lots of typically French cafes. Visited a great evening food market / festival in Jonzac nearby.
Guest rating:
Tonys place is absolutely wonderful! There is a lot to do at the spacious ground and the games and pool keep kids and grown ups entertained. We can really recommend this spot!

Exceeded our Expectations
We stayed in the cottage for a week in July with our children aged 15, 10 and 6. The cottage is the cleanest holiday home we have ever stayed in. It is large and airy and well equipped for a family. The grounds are fantastic for the kids, who enjoyed the trampoline, swing, trapeze rings (huge greatest showman fans) and of course the cleanest pool in France. Tony could not of been nicer he gave us some advice on the area, some extra Lilo’s and diving rings for the pool. There wasn’t lots of rules for the property. We hired bikes for the week and cycled to the bakery which was fun. There are lots of places to visit for a day trips. We went to the sandy beach and out for lunch, but as the World Cup was on we didn’t go far! All in all a great place to stay, clean, safe for families we would definitely come back. The photos don’t do it justice. It’s a beautiful property with a fantastic pool.Guest rating:
A Beautiful Place
Just back from two weeks at Le Manoir (26th August - 9th September). It's a beautiful place sitting in four acres of mature garden. We stayed in the larger three bedroom gite which had every modern convenience housed in a beautifully restored rustic stone exterior. Our congenial host provided everything we needed. The supermarket is roughly a five minute drive away in Mirambeau and is large and well stocked with everything you could need. There is also a good little boulangerie with delicious bread and deserts. If you are up for exploring Le Manoir is a great base with places like Cognac and La Rochelle to visit but also a relaxing and peaceful place to go to simply chill out....Guest rating:
This 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom cottage in the midst of a 4 acre garden was a gem of a find. The cottage was well equipped and in the grounds there is a games barn and various outdoor sporting activities not forgetting to mention the lovely swimming pool.A short drive away takes you to the Gironde Estuary where there are a number of seaside villages to while away your time or to explore. Our host, Tony, was very helpful regarding places to go and things to do in the area. Who knows, next year may find us having a B.B.Q. in the garden on a return visit. We loved it!
Guest rating:
We were delighted with the location and standard of our accommodation. Tony was the perfect host, on hand with helpful information and guidance but never overbearing or intrusive. Our boys (aged 14 and 12) found lots to do and although we had bikes with us there were plenty available from our host if required. The games room was a big hit with the boys and the pool was the cleanest and best kept that we have ever used. The area is peaceful but we had some great outings to the coast and to the local night market which was great fun. Altogether a very relaxing holiday in a wonderful rural location. Thanks for making us so welcome.
Guest rating:
The stay went very well. We were well briefed at the outset on how to use the facilities and get the most out of our stay. Any issues, eg with the trampoline (important for our children) were quickly addressed.

The Cottage is a large accommodation, ideal for families. From a well-equipped kitchen to bedrooms and bathroom with separate shower upstairs and then guests with mobility problems can be account in a ground floor suite with a wonderful wet-room. The cottage has shared access to a swimming pool and its all set in extensive grounds. Tony, the host, is very friendly and helpful. With lots of local knowledge he is well able to assist in planning itineraries, suggest outings or simply inform guests about local wildlife which is there in abundance. A holiday here will be enjoyable, relaxing and as enriching as you want it to be. I can't rate this property any higher

We had a very relaxing family holiday staying in the Cottage. The facilities in the cottage are excellent and very well kept. There are 3 bathrooms which was a plus and the showers are new and very good. The grounds are spacious and the pool was fantastic for the children. We had total privacy at our patio area with a BBQ and lovely views of the countryside. Lovely to use the cycles provided by the owner (for a small charge) to explore the local lanes all surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. Easy cycle to the local shop for bread and croissants. Tony (owner) was extremely helpful and gave good tips for places to visit in the area. Beaches in the Royan area very good for children.Guest rating:
Beautiful, sunny, perfect for family holiday At the end of a great stay at The Cottage and we were very sad to leave. Myself and my family had a great week here with fabulous weather and a wonderful setting. I have to say cycling through fields of sunflowers was amazing and it was at our doorstep! Tony was fantastic with suggestions and couldn't have been more helpful with every aspect of our stay. The pool is really great (v. clean) and the sun seems to shine everywhere in the garden all of the time! Thanks Tony for making us feel at home and being so generous with your time. Will hopefully be back again.Guest rating:
Myself and my family spent a great week in Tony's cottage. The cottage is very pretty and set in lovely peaceful countryside. Tony is a fantastic, enthusiastic host, who couldn't have been more helpful with things to do and places to see. The pool is a super bonus and we also rented bikes for the week, which were great fun in the evenings. Having a car is essential to stay here but the peaceful location is worth it! Highly recommend it.Guest rating:
This is a very comfortable property in a great location for exploring the villages and beaches on the Gironde estuary and also the countryside inland towards Cognac. It is good territory for cycling having a mass of very quiet roads. The gite has every facility and we much enjoyed the salt water pool and there is ample space for children to play outside as well as having indoor table tennis. We had splendid weather for touring around the local villages. Jonzac is a particularly good town for shopping and only about 20 minutes away by car. Our host, Tony Dearsley, was very affable and helpful at all times. I recommend the place.Guest rating:
We spent a wonderful relaxing week in The Cottage. We did not venture too far and mostly walked for miles through the beautiful countryside and enjoyed some good food and wine. The best thing about The Cottage is the setting, just sit, listen and observe and a whole world of wildlife is there – things we often miss in our busy lives – all magical. Tony has been an extremely attentive host and a great source of information on the local area. Thank you Tony! Hope you enjoy your time at Le Manoir as much as we did.Guest rating:
This place Rocks! I loved Le Manoir, lots of things to do. We all loved the Go-Karting just down the road. I loved the swimming pool and the Games room. Like playing basket ball and running around – Martha (10). I liked the swimming pool, I learnt to swim in it. I give this place a 5 star. The games room is awesome and I loved the rope swing – Charlie (8). Its very relaxing, lots of things to do. Tony was very helpful. The kids found plenty of things to do and we loved the eating in the street night market! – Paula This place is lovely to be around, very lovely people including the neighbours. Thank you Tony for everything. Tony is very helpful. Great for wheel chair users like me and I was even able to enjoy the local Go-Karts with the kids – Mark. The O'Niel Family from London (August 2014)Guest rating:
10 of us holidayed at Le Manoir so that the family could all attend the wedding of friends living at Marignac. After the wedding with all of its organisation, we began to settle into Le Manoir and savour the delights of the pool and Tony's play facilities. The beaches at Royan were a great draw in the hot weather and our 3 to 8 year olds found everything they could desire – sand, rock-pools, sand castles and dam construction!! We enjoyed the night market at Jozac and a visit to the Chateau at nearby Plassac where the Count showed us how he made his wine, Pineau and Cognac. Even threw in a bottle of Rose with our purchase! Le Manoir has proved to be a very comfortable headquarters for all of our activities. Tony has been extraordinarily helpful throughout our stay with no trouble spared to ensure everything ran smoothly. We really loved our time here. Thank you TonyGuest rating:
We are on a two week holiday to France and we are spending the second part here in Le Manoir. The cottage is beautifully renovated with all mod cons. It is so relaxing here we slept like babies. The grounds are extensive, safe and an ideal place to sit and chill out with a glass of wine. We have found many lovely things to do, see and eat – you must try the local Moules Marineres!! You can read all of our discoveries in the Guest Book when you stay at Le Manoir And, if you have any queries, just ask Tony. He has a wealth of knowledge about the area, customs, wildlife, food , wine etc. etc. A wonderful host! 05th to 12th July 2014Guest rating:
What can I say! Viv and I have stayed in many Gites all over France and this one, I must say, far surpasses anything we have stayed in before. Tony's attention to detail is so good. We have visited some lovely places whilst here and driven through some beautiful villages. But, our favourite times have been just sitting on the patio watching the large variety of birds, it has been amazing. You kindness and generosity of spirit has been so good Tony. We have had a wonderful stay and now sadly have to go back to the real world.

We rented the Cottage to allow us to meet with our daughter and her family. Tony was very welcoming and extremely helpful and full of good tips.
Our wee grandchildren were a bit too young to enjoy the various games and activities on offer but we spent many hours just pottering around with them in the lovely surroundings and they did enjoy the trampoline.
A beautiful place and we had some great lazy bbq's here. Tony was great at suggesting things to do etc. and thank you for the home made paddling pool for our wee ones who were too young for the swimming pool.
If you like foraging, then get to the bramble hedge and knock up a mean blackberry and apple pie!
We particularly enjoyed the evening eating in the street at nearby Jonzac and the beach south of Royan.
A great holiday and thanks to Tony.

This place is awesome!!! I would go to Suzac beach at Meschers it has golden sand and the water in the sea isn't very deep so it is good for little children. If the tide is low you can go through a cave and there is a restaurant nearby. (Cameron nearly 10!)
Fantastic Holiday! Tony gives excellent advice about the area and there are many lovely places to visit.Guest rating:
We counted ourselves lucky to find this Gite, complete with swimming pool! Friends had recommended the La Rochelle area and we were not disappointed.
This has been a wonderful week packed with lots of visits and things to do. We have left details of our great experiences in the Guest Book at the Gite.

Thanks Tony for all your help - the only bad part of the holiday break was packing up to go!
The weather was perfectly behaved and even the fairest of us achieved some colouring. We found some really beautiful beaches, details of which we have left in the Cottage Guest Book.
The downstairs suite with ensuite wet room was great for our daughter who needs a wheelchair and the local disability centre in Jonzac were able to provide all that we needed. We all had a lovely time and may well visit again. Many thanks.

We have been sorry to leave Le Manoir as we have had such a lovely time. The grounds are idyllic and both children and adults have enjoyed the freedom and space.
Tony has been most welcoming and helpful, we really couldn't have asked for more. Thank you. Our daughter aged 8 has written an advert for Le Manoir based on her holiday here, hope you enjoy it!!
If you haven't found your dream holiday home, we have got the place for you! Down in the South West of France, what we have found is the perfect place. With three lovely old buildings, we have chosen this because it has a swimming pool, a trampoline, lovely gardens and it is close to the beach!!

A truly wonderful stay, many thanks to Tony and his children for making our stay so superb and welcome.
Tony is passionate about the surrounding area and has a vast knowledge of the best towns, wines, restaurants and beaches.
Beautiful Gite kept wonderfully cool when the beaches became outrageously warm.
Thank you so much for your excellent hospitality.

We enjoyed the whole experience and flying in to La Rochelle, hiring a car to drive down, was quick and easy.
The garden gave us all room to do what we each wanted., particularly when the girls got a little loud in the pool! Plenty of space to find some peace and quiet. We loved watching the birds and the butterflies.
Tony always close at hand if any help or information needed - thank you.
I have enjoyed everything that this Gite has to offer - which is a lot. Thanks Tony for making our holiday so exciting. I have had a wonderful time.
PS Thanks for the cake and Ice cream!!!

Great time here at Le Manoir. The Gite is very comfortable and well equipped, everything has been thought of thanks.
The gardens are amazing and beautiful, very peaceful and relaxing. We spent a lot of time here, playing golf, flying kites, cricket as well as of course using the pool and all the other facilities. Table tennis and the pool table went down a treat. Saw lots of lizards which we loved.Lots of visits of which we have left details in the Gite Guest Book.
Used the bikes regularly in the morning to cycle down the lanes enjoying the sun flowers on the way to the boulangerie. Bit hot to cycle later in the day but managed a few runs whilst the boys cycled, lovely!
Tony is very helpful and always on the lookout for your enjoyment plus will always book restaurants if you need him to. All in all very relaxing and well thought out. Thank you it was a great holiday !!

We have stayed twice at Tony's Cottage. The first year we were on our own as a family and stayed in the Cottage. We liked it so much that we came back the following year with my parents-in-law and then booked both the Cottage and the Gite.
The location and the facilities of the place are fantastic. The kids (they were 4 and 6 the first time we went) loved all the space and the pool is excellent. Tony is a great host and always helpful in providing information on the local activities as well as helping to book tables at restaurants.
The Cottage is lovely and so nicely fitted out. It felt very relaxing and we will always have fond memories of the nights spent outside having a bar-b-q and relaxing enjoying a glass of Pineau.
The location is good for local restaurants and easy to get to shops. It's a little longer than the 30 mins to the nearest good beaches but as we were with young kids it was easy to get up early and be on the beach before lunch and have no trouble parking.
We really enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend to friends to stay at the Cottage.

Additional price notes
- Prices are based on occupancy by 6 people (2 in each bedroom). An additional person can be accommodated by adding an extra 3rd bed into the largest twin bedded bedroom. An extra rental charge of £45 per week is payable if you require this option outside of July and August. In July and August, the extra rental charge is £75.
- Usually we are only able to do a minimum of two weeks rental in July and August unless the holiday is less than 6 weeks away or a single week remains between other bookings. If you only require 1 week, its always worth checking with us.
- We are happy to discuss alternative changeover days outside of mid July and August.
- All beds are equipped with mattress cover, pillow and douvet or light blanket to suit the temperatures.
- You are very welcome to bring your own bed linen and towels. If you take up our option, then Bed Linen and Towel Hire means that all beds are made up for your arrival with sheet, pillowcase, douvet cover and each bed is provided with hand towel, bath towel and flannel.
- PLEASE NOTE - Linen hire does not include towels for use by the pool or on the beach. You must bring these yourself.
- Charente Maritime has a tax on holiday visitors to help pay for the additional costs they create for the local community - like extra waste to be disposed of. The tax is also used to promote tourism activities and events. The tax is only paid by adults over the age of 17 years. For my properties, the tax is #% of the proportion of the rental paid by the adults. So, if the total rental for 2 adults and 2 children was £700, the proportion paid by the adults is 2/4 or 50% so £350. The tax would then be 2.2% of £350 so £7.70, not too bad. The tax needs to be paid in EUROS to the owner at the end of your holiday. I can send more information if you email me.
