Pretty Village Property in Beautiful Carennac
A pretty and well-equipped cottage, in a quiet part of the village, just a 2-minute stroll into the heart of beautiful Carennac with its restaurants, café, glorious abbey and Tourist Office. A Depot de Pain is run from the village Café (both only open in summer months) for your freshly-baked baguettes & croissants, and throughout the year, bread delivery vans stop outside the property. From Carennac, there are many lovely hill-top villages, castles and mediaeval market towns to visit within a short drive, and two delightful rural water parks - with pool or lake swimming, water-slides and café, just a 2-minute drive from the property.
Carennac is a jewel of a village (officially designated "un des Plus Beaux Villages de France") where ancient houses snuggle round a fabled Clunisien abbey situated on the banks of the Dordogne river. In summer, the narrow streets are festooned with colourful window-boxes, and every turn reveals thrilling glimpses of courtyards, terraces, balconies and rose-gardens. It never fails to captivate even the most worldly of travellers.
La Marguerite (formerly a village grocery) was featured in the August 2015 edition of French Property News. It was built 60 years ago on a sunny, quiet corner, overlooking meadows and the hillside just above the village, and was converted into a holiday home in 2006. With its modern insulation, it stays cool in summer and is oh, so snug in winter! Light and airy all year round, with a vine-covered, west-facing terrace for al fresco dining, and a wood-burning stove/electric central-heating for cooler months, it is welcoming in all seasons.
Local attractions: (some seasonal) include: canoe-hire (at the edge of the village); two pretty water-parks (both just a few minutes by car); wonderful chateaux, hill-top villages and mediaeval towns to explore, walking, horse-riding, tennis and a picture-perfect 9-hole golf course overlooking the Dordogne Valley - many within a 15-2- minute drive of the property. Summer or winter, local towns continue to hold their weekly markets - always the nicest day to visit and enjoy a coffee or a refreshing beer in the local cafes.
La Marguerite has been furnished in an eclectic "country" style and sleeps 4. It comprises:
- Kitchen - modern, fully-equipped with dishwasher, washing machine and large fridge with freezer compartment
- Sitting / dining room - light, airy room with wood-burning stove, radio/CD player, DVD player, books, games & CD
- Two prettily furnished bedrooms - 1 double bedroom and 1 single bedroom/study
- Bathroom - spacious with excellent shower and heated towel rail
- Wi-fi/Broadband
- Wood-burning stove and electric central heating for winter lets.
Outside
At the front of the property, there is a spacious and sunny vine-covered terrace - ideal for al fresco dining. Table, chairs and parasol.
The lane is a designated walkers' route which leads you within five minutes up onto the wild and beautiful Causse de Gramat - a rocky plateau stretching south towards the Lot river some 50 kilometres distance where wildlife and rare & beautiful flowers abound in summer.
It is just a 2 minute stroll to the heart of the village, with its Tourist Office, post office, cafe and choice of restaurants (some seasonal).
Situated on the corner of a quiet no-through lane opposite an ancient pilgrim cross in beautiful, 11th century Carennac, the property is perfectly located to explore this glorious village, with its fabled Clunisien abbey, cloisters and museum.
This is the Dordogne valley of the 100 Years War - where fortified towns, villages and chateaux dominate the hill-tops. The breathtaking Rocamadour and ancient towns of Beaulieu, St Cere and Martel are all within 20 minutes’ drive. There are many colourful local markets to visit weekly - whilst the St Cere Summer Arts Festival (July/August) features live jazz, choral concerts and opera evenings at various nearby locations. 'Fetes de village’ abound locally throughout the summer months – often with fireworks, open-air dancing and antiques fairs.
Golf, horse-riding, tennis, paragliding and swimming (river or water-park) are all within a few minutes’ drive, and canoes can be hired in the village. The area is a haven for walkers and birdwatchers– who often wander past the properties on the old pilgrim route across the wild and beautiful Causse de Gramat.
This area is rich in geological phenomena – including the famous Padirac Gorge with its underground lakes and caves.
