We take great care to provide a wonderful setting for your holiday. The gardens, located as we are on our own hillside, are a place to relax and take in the far-reaching views. Our mature gardens are well planted and have ornamental and fruit trees under which you can shelter from the sun. You can picnic in our fields or wander along a lane or track that starts right from your front door.
Your own garden area is furnished to allow you to enjoy the outdoor life here - eat and drink under the shade of a tree or parasol. It is particularly beautiful here at night; no noise from traffic, no light pollution, more stars than you can imagine. Spend the warm summer evenings in your garden or relaxing with a drink beside the illuminated pool.
We have made so many friends over the years and enjoy your presence.... we are here to help you enjoy the best holiday possible.

Grand Brassac is midway between the busy market town of Riberac and the picturesque Brantome, sited on the banks of the River Dronne. The area is characterised by its rolling hills, forests and the unchanged, picturesque villages and hamlets of stone houses and farms. Farming is the dominant activity in this quiet, rural area.
The River Dronne is a great feature of the area; a young river which provides a whole range of holiday activities: sit on its tree-lined banks with a picnic; spend from an hour to a whole day canoeing its length through villages and pretty hamlets; go fishing or have a fun day on one of the sandy beaches, some with refreshment facilities and life-guards.
The immediate area of Grand Brassac and Montagrier is undoubtedly one of the best in the department for enjoying the countryside. Few roads but hundreds of kilometres of paths and tracks, many of them waymarked through the woodland, and passing hamlets and local cafes. They are enjoyed on foot, mountain bikes or horseback - cycle hire is available just a few kilometres from your gite.
There is a choice of several markets for every day of the week - this is local market country and they are active throughout the year. Riberac and St Astier provide markets which fill the streets in summer. Further afield, Perigueux is a bustling town, beautiful old streets and architecture as well as every shop and hypermarket you could desire!
We are lucky in that we are in the middle of the countryside, but with the river on our doorstep and some superb local facilities in our local villages we have a wide range of activities within 5-10km of the gite. All the activities listed below are available immediately around our home or within 10km. The golf and sailing are 25km from the gite.
- Rambling and Cycling - we are in the middle of woodland and farmland criss-crossed with paths and tracks. Many are waymarked and link the hamlets and villages. Tracks start literally at our gates. Cycle hire is available 3km away.
- Canoeing and Kayaking - The River Dronne is just 3 km from our farm. There are numerous places to hire canoes, be driven upstream in a bus and spend a lazy day or half-day paddling back to your car - starts at just 20 euros.
- Fishing and Beaches - The Dronne has several man-made sandy beaches; two within 6km of your gite and both with bar and restaurant. Fishing is possible anywhere along the river - a holiday permit can be bought for a few euros.
- Sailing, Windsurfing and Boating - There is a superb natural lake in the forest 30 minutes drive from your gite. Boats and windsurfing gear can be hired. Its a beautiful setting with white sandy beach, cafes and restaurants.
- Horseriding - we have contacts at two stables in our local villages where it is possible to ride.
- Rock Climbing - There is a rock climbing centre in Paussac, 6km from the gite. There are many cliffs in the area and several are managed by the centre where you can hire equipment and do supervised climbing.
- Flying! - Yes you can even do that. Bourdeilles is 7km from the gite and you can go up in a tandem micro-light for a 20 minute flight over the chateau, river and villages for just 25 euros.
- Golf - There is a municipal golf course at Perigueu, 20km from us.
- Birdwatching and Wildlife - two things the area has in abundance are birds of prey; in the four years we have lived here we have seen most of the indigenous species of birds of prey in the area and they are numerous. In the summer, if you want to wander the woodlands in the moonlight, owls are numerous. Deer, wild boar and hares are all seen around our land during the summer months when they are safe from hunting.
- Chateau and Architecture - There are hundreds of chateau in the area. Many are in private hands but there are several magnificent chateau open to the public...one of the best is just 7km away at Bourdeilles.

This was our second visit to Gail and Mike's gite, Le Chevalier. We stayed here in 2016 and had such a brilliant time, we just knew we had to return. And here we were again, sampling the atmosphere of the night sky, the views, the amazing cottage and the pool.Dragging ourselves away in the car most days, we visited river beaches, chateaux, grottes and ancient Roman ruins, no more than 45 mins away. We had an equally fabulous stay this time. Our hosts Gail and Mike are lovely people. We'll be back!

Thank you for a lovely relaxing stay at the gite. It is a perfect location with amazing views! We all loved Lilly too.

We had a fantastic family holiday. Gites are very comfortable with a nice traditional French farmhouse feel. Enjoyed the pool and nearby towns, rivers and lakes.

My wife and I had a first class 3 weeks in Le Chevalier April/May this year. The gite is in a lovely location in beautiful Dordogne countryside. If you want a get away from it all holiday, this should fit the bill. The accomodation has all you will need for self catering although there are some good restaurants within a short drive away in the nearby villages. It is clean and very cosy with plenty of outside sitting and BBQ areas. The big advantage of this gite is the fantastic pool.

However with the nice spell of sunny warm weather Mike worked very hard to get the pool open for the latter part of our stay. Gail and Mike are very amiable and friendly hosts and went out of their way to make our holiday as enjoyable as possible. Would have no hesitation in recommending this property. Hope to be back in future.Guest rating:
We had a wonderful holiday at Le Chevalier. Accommodation, pool, location and hosts are all fabulous. Returning again for 2 weeks next year!

We stayed with at Le Chevalier with our two sons and had such a great holiday that we have booked to go back. The gite is comfortable, the pool fantastic and the area beautiful.
We loved swimming in the nearby river and visiting the incredibly pretty local villages and towns.
Can’t wait to go back!Guest rating:
Wonderful holiday .... pool with a view! This was a wonderful holiday. The gite is very rural but close to lovely towns. The owners were so welcoming and friendly....our daughter got an ear infection and they were so happy to help us. The pool. WOW!! The pool itself is just a nice standard pool but the view is AMAZING! We watched swallows swooping, birds of prey, horses, ghekkos, frogs, cats and cute dogs. We even had a cuddle with the two pet pot belly pigs....gorgeous. This gite is perfect for a rural, rustic holiday in France. The gites are cool in the heat as the walls are so thick and fitted out with everything we needed. We loved having a cafetière and this is often an item missed by other owners. The gites have a garden each and a bbq. Local shops are nearby and there are many markets. If you can, do try the canoeing on offer - it is great fun and you see a beautiful river. A lovely gite, wonderful location, amazing owners and relaxing holiday.Guest rating:
A lovely peaceful location with stunning views! The gite had a rustic charm and offered enough space for 2 adults and 2 children. Comfortable and we soon made ourselves at home. The accommodation was clean on arrival and Mike the owner was very welcoming. We all loved the pool with it's wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. We found it easy to explore the area and loved wandering around the local markets. Keeping our two boys entertained was not difficult. Lots to do. We recommend kayaking, go-ape type adventure in the tree tops, go-karting and a visit to the Grande Dune de Pilat near Arcachon is a must see. We thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks, especially the chilling out by the pool, BBQs and the great food and wine. A dishwasher would have been nice!Guest rating:
Blissful break What a glorious place to stay! Wonderful area, wonderful accommodation and most thoughtful and delightful hosts imaginable. Clean, comfortable and because we were also attending a craft course we were able to have a total immersion in the Grand Bressac experience. We're already booked for next year and that probably tells you all you need to know. Love the gite, loved the countryside, loved the horses, pigs and chickens. We also took advantage of visiting the Lascaux cave paintings, about an hour away - fabulous!Guest rating:
Peaceful Gite Workshop This is a really lovely simple gite in a stunning and peaceful setting, off the beaten track, but close to all the local amenities and near to some wonderful tourist sites. Mike and Gail arranged a wonderful weaving workshop in Mikes weave studio next to the Gite with a great tutor. Five weavers stayed in one file while the tutor and two other weavers stayed in the other Gite. My friend and I arrived early so that we could have a relaxing few days enjoying the peace and quiet. The Gite had everything we could want for our stay, including excellent weather! Although we didn't have time time to enjoy the pool, it really looked inviting. It was such an enjoyable stay we have booked for next year and I've recommended it to my family, so may even book again!Guest rating:
La Bonne Vie We have just returned from an extremely pleasant two week stay in the ‘Le Chevalier’. We can certainly concur that this really is a beautiful location with wonderful outlooks from both the Gite and swimming pool across the surrounding valley and hills. The Gite was very well equipped enabling us to self-cater and barbeque as we seemed to strike it perfectly in terms of weather. Mike and Gail were extremely helpful with guidance on the locality and its surrounding attractions and we especially enjoyed afternoon tea at the retirement home for police horses in Brantome that they kindly booked us into. Of particular delight to us was the fact that the property was amongst a network of numerous cycling and walking trails that are well signposted and enabled us to explore, both on two wheels and on foot, the surrounding area. The trails really do start at the gate! In summary if your idea of a great holiday is to relax in a beautiful and peaceful haven with numerous leisure facilities close-by, this ticks all the boxes and would come highly recommended by us. We hope to return at some point in the future but until then will treasure the memories.Guest rating:
We spent a gorgeous week here with our little boy and friends. The location is so beautiful it's difficult to do it justice in words. The views of the countryside from the gite, grounds and pool are simply magnificent. It's so peaceful and relaxing here.As well as your own garden area there are extensive grounds to play and relax on. Our son enjoyed feeding the pigs and watching 'Tequila' jumping in the sand school. The swimming pool was fantastic, nicely heated making it very inviting. We loved Brantome and Bourdeilles especially, visiting a boulangerie in the morning to pick up fresh bread for a picnic next to the river. We also visited an amazing lake with lifeguards, a beach, children's park, picnic areas and cafes. The hosts, Mike and Gail were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble, especially when our son developed tonsilitis, arranging for us to see a local doctor late afternoon. It was a fantastic holiday and we look forward to returning in the future.Guest rating:
The property description is spot on. The location is perfect for those wanting to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the French countryside with plenty to explore in the surrounding areas. The gite was beautifully clean and tidy when we arrived. The swimming pool is an absolute bonus and we spent many hours lounging on the sun beds. Mike and Gail couldn't have been any more helpful and approachable; we had an issue with the washing machine and it was quickly resolved. They have horses, pot bellied pigs and chickens, are very knowledgeable about the area and will arrange bookings etc if you ask as they speak French. The local towns of Brantome and Bourdeilles are beautiful. There are lots of caves to visit and explore, the rivers are great fun offering plenty of opportunities to go Kayaking or swimming as some also have their own beach with slides! We would definitely recommend them and their wonderful gites to any of you considering booking. Do it!Guest rating:
Fabulous Place - so we are back! We can't give a better review than to say we have just booked again for this year; and 2 weeks this time! Gail and Mike are fantastic hosts and really went out of their way to make it a memorable holiday for the children. Bryony has hardly stopped talking about Tequila and Tommy. Gail organised riding for her last year, which was the highlight of her holiday - ours too as we had a whole afternoon in glorious sunshine beside the pool to ourselves! The pool is stunning with its views over the valley. This really is peace and tranquility. See you in July xGuest rating:
Great First Holiday! This was our first holiday as a family and we are so glad we stayed at Gail and Mike's gite. The gite was perfect for a child who had just started to walk. The enclosed garden meant we could relax and not have to have eyes in the back of our heads. The pool is amazing. Lovely and warm and we were able to stay in it for hours...a definite plus. A beautiful setting and perfect hosts. Will recommend to all our friends.Guest rating:
Dear Gail and Mike, Thank you so much for making our holiday special and enjoyable! All the best from the Swedes!
