We take great care to provide a wonderful setting for your holiday. The gardens, located as we are on our own hillside, are a place to relax and take in the far-reaching views. Our mature gardens are well planted and have plenty of ornamental and fruit trees under which you can shelter from the sun. You can picnic in our fields or wander along a lane or track that starts right from your front door.

Spend the warm summer evenings in your garden or relaxing with a drink beside the illuminated pool.
We have made so many friends over the years and enjoy your presence.... we are here to help you enjoy the best holiday possible.

Grand Brassac is midway between the busy market town of Riberac and the picturesque Brantome, sited on the banks of the River Dronne. The area is characterised by its rolling hills, forests and the unchanged, picturesque villages and hamlets of stone houses and farms. Farming is the dominant activity in this quiet, rural area.
The River Dronne is a great feature of the area; a young river which provides a whole range of holiday activities: sit on its tree-lined banks with a picnic; spend from an hour to a whole day canoeing its length through villages and pretty hamlets; go fishing or have a fun day on one of the sandy beaches, some with refreshment facilities and life-guards.
The immediate area of Grand Brassac and Montagrier is undoubtedly one of the best in the department for enjoying the countryside. Few roads but hundreds of kilometres of paths and tracks, many of them waymarked through the woodland, and passing hamlets and local cafes. They are enjoyed on foot, mountain bikes or horseback - cycle hire is available just a few kilometres from your gite.
There is a choice of several markets for every day of the week - this is local market country and they are active throughout the year. Riberac and St Astier provide markets which fill the streets in summer. Further afield, Perigueux is a bustling town, beautiful old streets and architecture as well as every shop and hypermarket you could desire!
We are lucky in that we are in the middle of the countryside, but with the river on our doorstep and some superb local facilities in our local villages we have a wide range of activities within 5-10km of the gite. All the activities listed below are available immediately around our home or within 10km. The golf and sailing are 25km from the gite.
- Rambling and Cycling - we are in the middle of woodland and farmland criss-crossed with paths and tracks. Many are waymarked and link the hamlets and villages. Tracks start literally at our gates. Cycle hire is available 3km away.
- Canoeing and Kayaking - The River Dronne is just 3 km from our farm. There are numerous places to hire canoes, be driven upstream in a bus and spend a lazy day or half-day paddling back to your car - starts at just 20 euros.
- Fishing and Beaches - The Dronne has several man-made sandy beaches; two within 6km of your gite and both with bar and restaurant. Fishing is possible anywhere along the river - a holiday permit can be bought for a few euros.
- Sailing, Windsurfing and Boating - There is a superb natural lake in the forest 30 minutes drive from your gite. Boats and windsurfing gear can be hired. Its a beautiful setting with white sandy beach, cafes and restaurants.
- Horseriding - we have contacts at two stables in our local villages where it is possible to ride.
- Rock Climbing - There is a rock climbing centre in Paussac, 6km from the gite. There are many cliffs in the area and several are managed by the centre where you can hire equipment and do supervised climbing.
- Flying! - Yes you can even do that. Bourdeilles is 7km from the gite and you can go up in a tandem micro-light for a 20 minute flight over the chateau, river and villages for just 25 euros.
- Golf - There is a municipal golf course at Perigueu, 20km from us.
- Birdwatching and Wildlife - two things the area has in abundance are birds of prey; in the four years we have lived here we have seen most of the indigenous species of birds of prey in the area and they are numerous. In the summer, if you want to wander the woodlands in the moonlight, owls are numerous. Deer, wild boar and hares are all seen around our land during the summer months when they are safe from hunting.
- Chateau and Architecture - There are hundreds of chateau in the area. Many are in private hands but there are several magnificent chateau open to the public...one of the best is just 7km away at Bourdeilles.

Having booked on the recommendation of our neighbours our holiday was everything we hoped for. Cottage is absolutely charming and the pool really is in a stunning location. Mike and Gail were great hosts and provided all the information we needed for lovely walks. We are sure we will be back; probably to see the area in springtime.
Guest rating:
Thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Not our first but the first time in La Bergerie and here without the kids. Amazing pool and such peace and quiet. Bike riding trails are amazing and well worth bringing our own. Fantastic hosts as always Gail and Mike; au revoir
Guest rating:
What a delightful place to stay! We had a lovely family holiday at La Bergerie. The gite was perfect for our needs and the heated pool in such a beautiful setting was just wonderful.
When we could tear the kids away from the pool, the surrounding area was just fantastic, with so much to do.
Highlights were mounting biking on the many trails leading from the gite; visiting Perigeux; and swimming at the local river beach.
We’d love to return when our youngest is old enough to go canoeing!Guest rating:
Our first family holiday abroad with the children and we loved it! We were made to feel very welcome by hosts Mike and Gail and the gite lived up to all expectations. The rural location made for perfect cycling - quiet roads, stunning scenery and beautiful villages to stop at, with just the right mix of hills and flat roads. It was great to relax by the pool (which offers stunning views), whilst watching lizards sunbathing on the terrace. A great spot for bird-spotting too.

Beautiful cottage full of charm with a lovely energy. Breakfasts in the cottage garden under the morning sun will linger in our memory as will the display of fireflys which we were privileged to see there at night. Views from the pool are amazing and helpful hosts to top a great week. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

We returned with our young family (now 10 months and 4 years) for another relaxing stay. We spent much of our holiday in the pool admiring the stunning views of the valley. My eldest son spent hours playing in the water.
The gite’s is full of character and the thick stone walls mean it’s provides a cool retreat from the summer sun when needed. The king size bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable too.Guest rating:
Thanks Mike and Gail for a wonderful holiday La Bergerie. The accommodation was perfect for our young family (7 week and 3 year old sons). The master bedroom is huge and the addition of sofas in the bedroom meant it was very comfortable for nursing my baby in the nights. This gite has all the facilities you need for your holiday plus your own beautiful courtyard garden for alfresco dining. Amazing views from the pool terrace. It’s so quie too. There is lots to do in the local area we particularl

What a great place to stay! Stayed pre-season, before the hot weather arrived. To early to use the pool but the cottage was very comfortable and the hosts are very welcoming. A lovely location, specially if you like nature as I heard the nightingale. Hurray, will be back next year!Guest rating:
Perfect for a relaxing, comfortable holiday The setting is idyllic, the accommodation is immaculate and comfortable and the welcome from the hosts, Gail and Mike, is friendly but unobtrusive. Just a short drive from excellent restaurants, supermarkets and other facilities yet still a quiet and peaceful retreat. This was my second visit, and I am returning yet again next year. And probably the year after that......Guest rating:
Once again, a wonderful holiday! Well, we just can't stay away - I think this was our fourth visit! We love the gites (we've stayed in both now), the grounds, the animals (especially George and Georgina, the pot-bellied pigs, who enjoy our left-overs), seeing the owners Mike and Gail with their horses, the views, and the pool. It's a fantastic location - out in the countryside (it's easy to see deer, rabbits, hare, hear birds call, there's virtually no light pollution so fabulous night skies), but close to places like Brantome, the region's fabulous restaurants, ... We find it very relaxing, but there's plenty to do in the area, too. Mike and Gail have been consistently helpful - when we first visited, my partner was battling a serious physical disability, and we had a series of e-mail exchanges, including photo attachments of the bathroom, to ensure the gite was suitable prior to making a booking. We're so pleased we did! From the start we felt extremely welcome. They are great hosts - friendly, informative, helpful, there if you need them, but never intrusive.Guest rating:
Great Location We had a fabulous first holiday with our 8 week old baby. Our friends booked the other Gite with their 3 year old boy. We all flew into Bordeaux and we were a bit apprehensive about the journey but it wasn’t a long flight and a straight forward drive to Mike and Gail’s. The Gite has a beautiful secluded gated garden ideal for stays with children. It is well equipped and in a great location for a quiet break in the French countryside. The heated pool was a particular highlight as the weather was glorious and the pool warm enough for our baby to have his first swim. It is impossible to describe how quite it is, we felt so relaxed from the moment we arrived. There are lots of lovely walks from the doorstep which helped us get the baby off to sleep. We hired a car to see the local area and enjoyed wandering around the beautiful local towns of Bourdeilles and Brantome. We also visited Lac Jemaye twice as it was so beautiful, quite and had great facilities. Thanks to Mike and Gail for being such helpful and friendly hosts. We will back. We loved the pigs too!Guest rating:
Perfect Family Holiday This is a fabulous place to take young children. The pool is heated and provides endless fun for old and young - with lovely views. You are close enough to a village but far enough out to really relax. There are chickens and pigs for the children to feed which our kids loved. The gites are right near the owner but you don't feel like they are on top of you at all. The owners were friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable, even helping us with our own property search. The gites are clean and well equipped for a super summer holiday.Guest rating:
Amazing Stay! This home is amazing, from the pool to the owners. Everything is very well-kept and stocked, plus the kids LOVED feeding and watching the pigs and chickens. The pool is lovely with an amazing view. We did quite a bit of sightseeing because of the weather, but the local towns kept us busy. Things were close enough so that a day could be spent at the pool and wandering around a local market or town. There is privacy if wanted but we also really enjoyed visiting with the hosts and family next door. Gail and Mike are absolutely lovely. They not only gave us (great!) recommendations when needed, but they couldn't have been more helpful when we had a little family disaster. Truly kind people that I hope to visit again.Guest rating:
Beautiful location Gail and Mike certainly chose a fantastic location to live. It is just So quiet! We stayed in La Bergerie which we ablsolutely LOVED. Charming renovation with a lovely sunny breakfast garden. The pool and its views really are a jewel in the crown. We are definitely coming back in September just for those poolside views - thank you both for a lovely holiday and see you soon.Guest rating:
