The bastide village of Villefranche-du-Perigord is located in the Valley of the Lémance between the valleys of the Lot and Dordogne rivers; and still retains very beautiful medieval buildings dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. A town rich in wonders and friendliness especially on market day Saturday mornings where you can soak up the ambience and vibrant colours of French life around the market. The countryside surrounding Villefranche is rich in animal and birdlife with interesting natural terrain perfect for walking and cycling. You may even hear the barn owl hunting at the rear of the property at night or spot deer and wild boar.
Villefranche-du-Perigord one of the famous bastide villages lying in the south of the Perigord Noir region famous for its foie gras, walnuts and cepe mushrooms but is a closely guarded secret where you might find the cepe.
Coustalou is the perfect base for exploring the neighbouring bastide towns such as Monpazier and Domme in the Dordogne, Monflanquin and Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the Lot Valley. Villefranche is only 40 mins drive from the stunning towns of Sarlat and Domme overlooking the river Dordogne and in both Lot and Dordogne valley you will discover stunning medieval riverside towns overhanging both these beautiful rivers. There are numerous historic and geographical sites to explore including the famous Lascaux caves at Montignac, Rocamadour - a fantastic place of pilgrimage and serenity and experience the vulture displays at Rocher des Aigles at Rocamadour - truly spectacular. Padirac and la Roque Gageac can also be visited from Villefranche and if you want to travel further afield Bordeaux and the coast is approx 2 hrs away with wine tours and tasting available at Bordeaux for the wine expert.

This must be our/ my fifth stay at Coustalou and on each occasion there is no disappointment - even when the weather is a little cool - the peace of the home is wonderful. Let me encourage anyone looking at this site to book and come to stay at Coustalou - Villefranche du Perigord - a wonderful village with a typical Dordogne charm - the local people are most friendly and the food and wine of the area is of course excellent. I have been to stay is May this year and the weather was perfect - in 2014 we chose to stay last week May / first week in June and sometimes it falls at the end of the Spring weather - so for those who don't like the heat this may be a good time to stay - but for myself if you like 30 degrees C and above go there in July onward s - and try the local swimming pool and sit back with some chilled white wine. Brilliant- I would live there - without doubt!!!!Guest rating:
We spent 2 weeks in the pretty, quiet Villefranche-du-Perigord. Le Coustalou is cosy with a small terrace at the back overlooking rolling wooded countryside. It feels homely and comfortable. We ate and played cards on the terrace. The facilities worked well - plenty of hot water for showering. The owners were very helpful, everything worked like clockwork. The village centre is nearby, barely 5 minutes away, with two boulangeries - fresh bread in the mornings! Two shops provide essentials and more. The locals are very friendly. There is an outdoor, communal dinner on Thursday evenings under the covered market. Vendors sell hot food and local dishes with long tables at which to eat. There is a real buzz! The owner of the nearby camp site offers access to the outdoor swimming pool for the price of buying drinks. The camp site cafe offers simple, but tasty, fare. We also enjoyed eating at La Petite Auberge, on a hill up a quiet country lane, and le Café du Commerce in the market square. We visited Cahors, Villeneuve-sur-Lot, the spectacular Rocamadour, cliff-top gardens at Marqueyssac, canoeing on the Dordogne, the château at Biron and the medieval town of Sarlat. This was a memorable family holiday and a taste of the real France!Guest rating:
Geriatric Reunion 2013
We chose La Retraite in Villefranche Du Perigord after quite a long search; we were not disappointed. The booking process was seamless due to good communication and attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble. The house was very welcoming and well equipped. The terrace was the perfect place to relax and enjoy some alfresco dining; unfortunately due to the unseasonal weather we didn't do it justice. We did manage one visit to the local camp site where we were made welcome by the owners and enjoyed a leisurely afternoon in and around the pool. Villefranche is a delightful small town and we enjoyed having all amenities so close by. We met our neighbours who were friendly and always had time for a chat - not forgetting Lily the cat. We visited picturesque villages on the Dordogne but we all agreed that Villefranche was special as it is distinctly French. A great holiday, one of the best. Thank you Rachel and David

On a passe un sejour formidable! Your house was exactly what we needed for our break. It felt welcoming from the moment we walked through the door, we'd like to come again. Plenty of space for a family with three teen-aged children, while still feeling cosy.
Guest rating:
Many thanks for a wonderful week in Villefranche. We found the house extremely well equipped and nicely decorated throughout. The rear bedroom was a true delight, with clear views across the pastoral landscape. The jewel in the crown was the superb terrace, where we dined every breakfast and evening soaking up the ambiance of the French countryside.
Villefranche is a quiet town, but is just the place for getting away from it all, and is well placed for sightseeing to both the Dordogne and Lot valleys. Jacqui and Harry Harrison - Stayed in Jun 2012
Guest rating:
A fabulous family holiday in VDP, our thanks go to Rachel and David for allowing us to borrow their home for our two week holiday.
With four adults and two children the gite was everything and more than we expected. The locals were welcoming, friendly and helpful, the daily trip for the croissants was one of Sauls (aged 10) holiday memories as it was safe enough to go the village alone. The local campsite involved us from the first day where we enjoyed lazy days and themed nights.
The area has many wonderful day trips to keep everyone busy such as canoeing the Dordogne (especially loved by Frankie the springer spaniel) and the surrounding bastide towns and famous caves. A holiday that will be treasured for many years, thank you so much.

We enjoyed a wonderful week at Coustalou Villefranche du Perigord, the house was very welcoming and perfect for our needs, very clean, comfortable and so much space and everything you could possibly need, plus a lovely welcome from the keyholder and a bottle of local wine! Sitting on the terrace until late watching the stars drinking wine or watching the world go by at Jean-marie's cafe after visits to various beautiful bastide towns, castle and ancient churches and riverside beaches was just fantastic, we are looking forward to our next visit.
Guest rating:
We have visited Coustalou Villefranche du Perigord twice, both times very different but equally enjoyable.
During our holidays we managed to cram in visits (amongst others) to the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe at the Aquarium du Perigord Noir, an enchanting tour of the Chateau de Commarque, a castle that lay undiscovered for hundreds of years and a ride on a medieval Gabarre on the Dordogne river at the winemaking capital of Burgundy. The highlight of our two visits was the town of Rocamadour, a town built into the very rock of the mountains itself, truly a magnificent spectacle.
We could not fault the accommodation, it was spacious and welcoming and always a relaxing place to come home to after a hard days sightseeing. If you're looking for a holiday to relax and unwind then this is definitely the place for you.
