Four Lovely Gites and Pool in the Foothills of the Montagne Noire
Au Pont Romain is a restored marble mill, set in two acres of land in the peaceful foothills of the Montagne Noire. Running along side the property is the Argent Double river, a great source of enjoyment for children and adults alike.
We have four well equipped Gites, each having there own furnished patio area with a gas barbecue. There is a large enclosed pool with stunning views of the mountains within a large garden area.
We offer a free wine tasting on Friday evenings with a selection of excellent Minervois wines, also giving you a chance to meet our other guests. If you have enjoyed our wine tasting evening and the company of the other guests you can join us for a barbecue on Sunday evenings and/or an evening meal on the Wednesday evening (see prices for these in additional pricing).
We are a 10 minute walk, along a quiet road, from the charming medieval small town of Caunes Minervois, with its historically famous Abbey. There are many varied walks for all ages and abilities in the Minervois region including the Montagne Noire and the Canal du Midi. We have information and maps on many of these walks.
La Montagne is a lovely two storey Gite with a large patio, giving views of the garden and mountains beyond.
Ground floor
- Kitchen/sitting/dining area - a spacious open plan area which includes a wood burning stove (great for the winter months). The kitchen area includes a four ring gas hob, microwave and fridge.
- Shower room - to the left of the kitchen is a door leading to this room, which consists of shower, hand basin, WC, and heated towel rail/heater.
First floor
- Landing - wooden staircase leading to a large area with a single bed
- Bedroom 1 - with a large double bed
- Bedroom 2 - with twin beds
Outside
The patio is fully furnished and includes a gas barbecue.
- The Argent Double river that runs along the side of our property is perfect for exploring in or just cooling off your feet.
- There is a large garden for children to run around in.
- The enclosed swiming pool complies with the current French safety laws, and has great views of the mountains. It has parasols and sun loungers on the spacious terrace and decking area. We use an Ionisation filtration system which means only a small amount of chlorine is added, great for the hair and skin!
- We have several sets of boules, and a large gravelled area at the front of the house ideal for playing with them on.
Au Pont Romain, sitting along side the 'Argent Double' river, in the foothills of the Montagne Noire, is an old restored marble mill. Ten minutes wander from the small medieval town of Caunes Minervois.
Caunes is a 25 minute drive in a north eastly direction from the medieval city of Carcassonne.
Caunes is famous for its imposing Abbey (founded circa 780), and for the red marble in the many different hews, that adorn many of the Churches in the region. This red marble was transported to Au Pont Romain, from one of the three marble quarries just outside of Caunes for cutting. Along with the mill streams in the garden you will find large slabs of the marble, reminding us of the history of Au Pont Romain.
Caunes Minervois is a thriving small town, with a selection of useful shops and a bank. It has a very popular Bar/Tabac with Restaurant which serves good food. There are several other good restaurants in the town and surrounding villages. The old town surrounding the Abbey has many small winding streets, perfect for wandering around.
Caunes is a very cultural town with concerts, exhibitions and festivals taking place throughout the year. The Abbey has a good tourist information centre and is home to the July evening concerts, enjoyed by many people in the Amphitheatre of the Abbey.
If you are interested in the local wines there are several small wine producers who will be happy to give you a tasting.
The activities selected below are all available either on our property or within an hours drive from our property.
There is more information available on these activities in every Gite and should you need help with more information on any activity or booking if necessary, we are happy to help.

Caunes-Minervois is a lovely mediæval town with a village feel. Half a dozen restaurants, one lively bar, banks, boulangerie, butcher, supermarket, Post Office, and the dramatic Montagnes Noires. Le Pont Romain is in an idyllic setting in the lee of the Montagnes, yet only about 10 minutes easy walk from the centre. Andy and Su are impeccable hosts, the rooms are all spotless with everything you could want, and the winetasting nights and the evening meal and barbecue nights are something special, combining wine buff Andy’s local wine knowledge with Su’s great culinary skills. Children are also well catered for on these evenings. The pool is lovely and warm, and the Argent Double flows gently past your door. This should be on your list of places to visit sometime in your life. Once bitten, you’ll be smitten, and you’ll return. We’ve been four times in two years, in spring, summer, and winter. Don’t delay - go and stay.Guest rating:
