The property is situated in 11.5 acres of parkland. The parkland now includes 3 paddocks where the 4 donkeys (Mum, Dad, Daughter & Son) graze all day long The pool is shared only with the owners. Visitors are encouraged to walk the parkland.
This gorgeous property is located 700 metres from the centre of the most beautiful romantic town of Brantome with a huge choice of charming, traditional restaurants. All shops and amenities.
Local Information
The property is located 700 metres from the centre of the beautiful picturesque town of Brantome which is known as the ‘Venice of Periogord’. It is liberally appointed with cafes and highly recommended restaurants including the Moulin d’Abbaye. The 11th century Abbey with its strange carvings in the caves dominates the town and overlooks the River Dronne. Many Chateaux can be found around Brantome and a visit to Google Earth will highlight the delights of this most beautiful area of France. Brantome holds its own street market on Friday which offers local produce including cheeses and wines etc., and the largest market in the Dordogne can be found on Wednesdays at Piegut Pluviers a 35 minute drive away. Brantome is less than a 2 minute drive from the property or a 15 minute walk.
Perigueux (28 km) is the capital town of the Dordogne – a mid-size, bustling place with lots of traditional restaurants and markets. Best eating places are around boulevard Montaigne, rue Limogeanne and the lovely Place St Louis.
Just north of Brantome is the hamlet of Villars. The hamlet itself is unexciting, but it is surrounded by lovely countryside and is a great base from which to explore Chateau de Puyguilhem and St Jean de Cole. The Grottes de Villars (pre-historic caves) are just past the hamlet and were discovered in 1958 and feature cave paintings. Also on the doorstep of Brantome is Bourdeilles offering a beautiful Chateau and Church to explore.
St Emillion is a most beautiful town worthy of a visit, with the stunning cathedral and catacombs in the centre of this fascinating ancient town. Why not take time to visit one of the many world-famous vineyards you will be rewarded for your time and effort.
Don’t miss a trip to La Roque-Gageac, a stunningly beautiful village under the towering cliffs. The village regularly wins France’s ‘Prettiest Village’ competition. Good canoeing centre here for those sporty types.
Competing with La Roque-Gageac in the prettiness stakes is the village of Carennac. Elevated just above the south bank of the river, it is best known for its typical Quercy architecture and Romanesque priory. Further Romanesque art at the St Pierre church in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.
Canoeing in the Dordogne is hugely popular. There are rental centres on almost every curve and corner of the river. Some of the bigger centres are based at La Roque-Gageac, Martel, Argentat and Beynac.
Bergerac is a bastide town and was once a flourishing port for the wine trade. All amenities are here. Plenty of shops and traditional restaurants. The town square features a statue of Cyrano de Bergerac. Supermarkets and Musée du Tabac (tobacco museum).
Just west of Bergerac is another bastide town, Ste-Foy-la-Grande. Good tourist office here and also a superb Saturday street market.
8 miles further on is Montcaret with a wonderful 3rd century Roman villa with original mossaics and baths.
Sarlat-le-Canéda is a very popular tourist destination. A charming and busy traditional village, which is the capital of Perigord Noir. Lots of 15th and 16th century houses lake this a very picturesque place and there are many good restaurants and cafés to discover. Excellent market on Saturday.
Perhaps the most famous of the Dordogne tourist attractions are the cave paintings around Les Eyzies. There are more pre-historic caves in this area than you could ever visit in a day! Les Eyzies lies at the heart of an unspoilt area of great natural beauty with rolling hills, tranquil rivers and fascinating cliff and rock formations. It has some of the world’s most beautiful caves with outstanding stalagtite and stalagmite cristallisations. And the cave-lined Vézère valley has been classified as a heritage site by UNESCO.
The most well-known of all is the cave at Lascaux which was discovered in 1940. The paintings date back some 17,000 years.
Brantome offers sporting activities, horse-riding, canoeing, golfing, tennis, cycling and fishing. Or why not sit and relax with a glass of wine in the town square, which is situated on the island of Brantome and watch the world go by!

We have just had 2 weeks in this fantastic Gite We were meet on arrival by Julia and Richard who where the perfect hosts who showed us around only to found a welcome pack of coffee, tea, biscuits and a nice bottle of wine which was much appreciated. The Gite is excellent, well fitted out with every thing you need and is a perfect base to tour the North of Périgord were we visited such places as Oradour-sur-Glane which was a very moving place and many more places returning to a very relaxing swim the the magnificent pool. We also made friends with Jasper one of their cats who was always there to welcome us back not forgetting the four donkeys. We would also recommend the restaurant which is next to the Gite and would certainly recommend this gite.Guest rating:

Great restaurant next door lovely food. Brantôme is a lovely place, lots of places to visit not to far away Oh forgot to Jasper the cat he welcomed home every day and a special mention for the family of donkeys Thank you Julia and Richard for a lovely stay From Christina,Mike,Christine and TonyGuest rating:
We had a truly wonderful stay in Brantome. On arrival we received a very warm welcome from Richard and Julia, who showed us around their immaculately presented Gite. The Gite was in a beautiful, peaceful location. The Gite itself was spacious and had everything that a guest would need and extras including a bottle of wine, biscuits, and a lovely vase full of fresh flowers were well received.
Brantome itself just walk/drive away was breathtakingly idyllic and had many little shops, cafes and restaurants. We highly recommend the restaurant Le Moulin De L’Abbaye; on the riverside - the location was perfect. The service and food were 1st class. It is a Mitchlin star restaurant and isn’t cheap but we highly recommend this little gem. On the other end of the spectrum, we dined twice at a lovely little pizzeria called La Strada. Lovely food and service in a cave like restaurant. There’s also a restaurant next door to the Gite.
Lovely owner and a good menu. There are many places to visit nearby. We visited St Emillion for wine tasting and tour, Chateaus in Bourdeilles (also had a Mitchlin star restaurant called L’Atelier des Sens - not as expensive as the one in Brantome and the food was very good) and Monbazillac. The village St Jean de Cole is well worth a visit too. Highly recommend canoeing and crazy golf in Brantome.
Richard and Julia were the perfect hosts - thank you both for a wonder holiday and a special mention to their family of donkeys.

Richard and Julia made everything so easy for us and nothing was too much trouble. Real assets to the hospitality industry.
The gite is well equipped and spotlessly clean. Brantome is such a lovely little town and an ideal base for that part of the Dordogne.
Go see for yourselves.

We had a lovely week at Brantome Gite. The property is lovely, the pool is amazing and Brantome and the Perigord is delightful. We only wished we had booked for longer!

Myself, my husband, son and daughter aged 11 and 14 stayed here for 2 weeks in August. Julia and Richard are very welcoming and showed us round the gite, pool area and beautiful gardens. Everything about the gite was amazing, we couldn't fault it. It was large, well equipped, the beds were very comfy and the garden was perfect. Julia and Richard are lovely and very good company, my daughter helped Julia feed her donkeys, which was the hilight of her holiday. We regularly walked into Brantome in the day and evening, via the Chemins which were very scenic. There are nice restaurants in Brantome catering for everyone and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the canoeists on the river. We went canoeing to Bordeilles, visited the Police Horses and there are lots of chateaus to visit. Sarlat and Domme are well worth a visit too. We would recommend Brantome Gite for a lovely place to spend your holidays.

I am not one for writing reviews, but I had to make an exception for the Brantome Gite. We have just returned with our 8 and 11 year old daughters from a fantastic two weeks in Brantome.
The gite was immaculate when we arrived and deceptively spacious too. We met Julia and Richard upon our arrival who showed us around the property and thereafter, were the perfect hosts. We always felt they were there when we needed them but equally they let us go about our holiday without any distraction.
We are regulars to the region so had a list of places we planned to visit in advance. However, we received some welcome tips from Richard about some of the places we were visiting, such as Sarlat and St Emilion.
My daughters were particular pleased when they saw the size of the pool and the inflatables that were awaiting their arrival!! As other reviews confirm, Richard keeps the pool to a very high standard and that is to his credit.
The gite itself is very welcoming and cosy. It was lovely and cool which was very welcome (for me anyway!) as we had some very warm weather in the middle of our stay! There is a nice, peaceful eating area just outside of the front door where we spent most of our evenings playing cards and board games with our children. It was a lovely peaceful holiday and we were devastated to leave!!
We can't recommend the Brantome Gite highly enough as both a property and destination. Thank you Julia and Richard!!

A clean and well equipped gite, with an excellent swimming pool.
Guest rating:
Excellent accommodation and hosts who were extremely helpful and knowledgeable during our 2week stay. We must say the swimming pool was excellent and always in first class order thanks to Richard. An excellent place to stay especially if you like animals.
Guest rating:
Lovely spotlessly clean gite. Very comfortable beds and excellent shower. Julia and Richard are delightful and very helpful without being intrusive. Plenty of cats around and donkeys for animal lovers to enjoy. Our dog Luca was made very welcome too which was lovely. Plenty of land for him to run around safely off lead , and lots of nice walks in the local area too. A twenty minute walk through the countryside will take you into Brantome with all its restaurants and shops. Two supermarkets are also close by for stocking up. An excellent dog friendly restaurant just next door to the gite if you’re feeling lazy and not wanting to walk into the village. The gite has a lovely large swimming pool which although a bit bracing to get into is actually very refreshing. Pool towels supplied daily. A very enjoyable stay.
Guest rating:
Very clean and stylish, convenient and quiet location, and friendly welcoming owners. Only small downside was my partner"s allergies (possibly worse because of cats) and difficulties he had with weak WiFi system. But I had a lovely time (and wish I could have used the pool more than once!)
