A beautiful, vine-covered house situated in the peaceful, ancient village of Migron with its pretty, 11th century stone church - the heart of the Cognac/Pineau producing area and surrounded by acres of vineyards and sunflowers. Excellently furnished and equipped throughout, with large, airy living rooms which stay cool even on the hottest of Charentaise days. Highest possible rating from user reviews on TripAdvisor
Thouvenin has four bedrooms situated upstairs:
- The principal bedroom is very large, with a super-king-size bed.
- The second largest bedroom, with its pretty limed-oak furniture, has a 5' double bed.
- The third and fourth bedrooms are identical in size and each has bunk beds with a single on top and a pull-out double underneath.
- The family bath and a new shower room are situated upstairs
- There is a separate toilet downstairs.
- The kitchen itself is extremely well equipped with good quality utensils, plenty of pots and dishes etc, a large fridge-freezer, ceramic hob, multi-function oven, full-size dishwasher and washing machine. The kitchen has a dining area, ideal for informal eating.
- In addition there is the beamed dining room, with a long dining table (seating for up to 10), candelabra and an 18th century Charentaise stone fireplace.
- The extremely spacious sitting room which includes 2 sofas and a further armchair, has a large colour tv with Freesat bringing all BBC and ITV channels as well as French television, dvd player, vhs player and a cd player. There is a plentiful selection of book and games.
- In winter months, the second Charentaise stone fireplace in the living room is available in addition to the central heating and a plentiful supply of logs is provided.
The pool is 9x4m is heated and has been recently refurbished. Its open from April to October. The pool is fully fenced and has a good supply of loungers with a large paved area surrounded by flower beds and a rosemary hedge.
The house gets its name from when it was Hotel Thouvenin, the station hotel. Before that, it was a typical Charentaise farmhouse dating back to the 18th century. The railway has long since gone and quiet has returned to the village. The mezannine area, fully undercover and accessible from the ground and first floors, has been converted into a private café/bar, capturing the feel of a stylish, but lost era. Its louvred wall provides dappled shade even at the height of summer.
The village Pretres cassock hangs on the hatstand alongside the Gendarmes cap, beside thirsty travellers luggage awaiting their departure. It is furnished with tables and sofas and the hand crafted zinc bar has both a fridge and a freezer hidden within it. Its a fabulous spot for breakfast, or leisurely enjoying a good book out of the sun, and the perfect place for a late night drink at the end of a relaxing day. We can even arrange to stock the bar before you arrive!
Thouvenin has a covered dining terrace which also includes a full-sized table tennis table, overlooking the pool. Adjacent is the brick-built barbecue and the boules area, hedged by lavender bushes and ornamental grasses.
The village is surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields, and all roads lead to further sleepy villages, vineyards, abbeys and historic sites. The properties are within 20 minutes of the beautiful historic towns of Cognac, Saintes and St Jean D'Angely. Each is worth several days of your time with elegant squares, parks, good shopping, great food, lovely bars... and the largest supermarkets. Even closer are the villages of Burie (5 minutes) and Matha (10 minutes) with supermarkets, cafes and a range of shops.
The properties are just 40 minutes from the beautiful sandy beaches of Royan and an hour to Bordeaux, La Rochelle and the fantastic islands of Ile de Re and Ile D'Oleron. Near the coast are massive areas of sea marshes, nature reserves with egrets, storks and coypu, a true wildlife haven.
Near the coast too are the huge oyster and mussel beds that serve the restaurants of France. Every village and town has a local market, inevitably with fresh seafood, and vegetables and cheeses piled high. Each village too will have a summer festival weekend and Cognac has an international music festival which attracts the biggest names, but also has music in every cafe and in the pedestrianised streets.
Migron and the surrounding area is excellent for cycling, miles and miles of level countryside with virtually traffic free routes through vineyards, fields, woodland and villages. Other activities include river trips, antiques markets (large brocantes held in surrounding villages regularly throughout the summer), visits to chateaux, churches and museums, walking, cycling and bird-watching.
Sport and leisure in the area include golf (18 hole courses in both Cognac and Saintes which are 20 minutes away), horseriding, all types of fishing, tennis (including a court in the village), canoe-kayaking (boats to hire at various places along the Charente in Cognac and Saintes), and plenty of space in and around the village to kick a football.
We will supply details of all the local attractions, markets and beaches. Our caretaker will research your special interests, book tickets and restaurant tables if you so require... an optional, but entirely free service..
It is perfect for those who want a quiet village surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields, but don't want to be too remote. Migron has a well-stocked mini-market complete with a tiny coffee bar. Its a 5 minute walk and almost next door is the village bakers. The bakery is exceptional and actually supplies most of the bakery shops in the surrounding area. The shop is simply a counter within the bakery itself. A pizza van with a wood burning oven calls on Monday evenings and oysters and mussel stalls appear on Saturday morning.
The village also has a post office and hairdresser and a vegetable van calls during the week. The village of Migron is truly historic and has at its heart, the church, a natural spring and a communal washing station.

Interesting house in a nice village which has a small shop, excellent boulangerie and a good butcher.
The property is well maintained by a helpful local couple, English speaking, nice pool although no shallow area for small children, and good outdoor space for eating and sitting. The owner was very organised and prompt in the booking process. Highly recommended.Guest rating:
A charming property. Well fitted, with everything you might need. Beds are extremely comfortable! Lovely shower! Bar room is idea for evening entertaining or relaxing. Pool is a good size & shaded terrace with barbeque perfect for dining on a hot day. Ample parking. Supermarkets are 5-10mins away, as is Ecomusée du Cognac which is well worth visiting. Cognac & other larger towns are 20mins away. The coast is 45m–1hr away. The perfect place to stay for large families or for group of friends. Bernal, who looks after Thouvenin, was extremely helpful. Would thoroughly recommend!
Guest rating:
Thouvenin is a charming property with enough space to accommodate ten people easily. Well fitted kitchen with everything you might need. The large sitting room has ample seating, with two lovely, huge sofas and some armchairs. The dining room would easily accommodate a dozen people. Most importantly, the beds are extremely comfortable! The additional bar room is idea for evening entertaining or just getting away from it on a hot day.
Outside, the pool is a good sizeGuest rating:
Thouvenin was perfect for us (2 families) staying for 2 weeks. The owner provided an immense amount of helpful and useful information. Very much appreciated. The property is really large with a very big/lovely open dining space that overlooks the pool. The formal dining room is very big but we only used it once when the weather wasn’t warm enough to eat outside. The kitchen is well stocked and the washing machine and dishwasher are a great asset! The lounge is a great place to escape from the heat also. The bedrooms are sizeable with 2 having super king size beds and 2 with bunks (single on top and double on bottom). We took our own pillows as we are never sure if we end up with square pillows on French properties. As it turns out they had regular pillows! The pool was a great size.
We used the bar area frequently and used the fridge/freezer as our drinks fridge as the fridge in the kitchen is a standard fridge freezer which wouldn’t accommodate all our food and drinks. If you want to keep the house cool the trick, as we discovered, is to open the windows first thing then shut the windows and shutters from about 11am then reopen them all again once the sun has set and let the air flow around the house. Migron is a tiny village in the middle of vineyards a plenty. It’s really beautiful. There is a small museum down the road which you can visit and taste their own cognac. A great array of markets to choose from in the area. All in all a lovely stayGuest rating:
Just (literally) come back from a 2 week holiday here. It's a fantastic, characterful property in a rural village. It truly is spacious and we spent many occasions walking around in circles after each other! It is comfortable, well equipped and the pool was perfect (especially when temperatures over 35c!) There was ample space for a family of 6 or more to be together or separately. The bar area was a lovely addition and great for enjoying the warmth but out of the sun. The addition of family activities such as ping pong and boules made it all the more enjoyable and we were quite happy spending the day at the house and being as lazy or active as we wanted. Location wise it offers a great base for a wide area with many places of interest being only about 30 -40 minutes away. To get to some fantastic beaches took just over an hour but made an easy and comfortable day trip. Everyone from owner to caretaker ensured the booking and stay was stress free and enjoyable. Thank you.

We had a lovely stay in Migron. The house is lovely. We found it spacious, clean and comfortable. Downstairs there is a well equipped kitchen with everything you need, a comfortable living room, a rather grand dining room and a small toilet. Downstairs was comfortably cool after coming in from the heat. Upstairs the bedrooms were comfortable and clean. The two bathrooms meant no queues for the shower. Outside, the garden is beautifully kept, with a variety of areas to sit. The canopy at the back gives shelter from the sun for the outside table and chairs and the barbeque and the table tennis table, There is a bistro table and chairs at the back door and also at a terrace at the pool. We loved the pool. It's a good size and well maintained. The mezzanine bar area is a fun addition to the house. It feels like you are in an old French movie! Migron is very quiet. The local boulanger has the freshest bread and pastries, but you need to get there early. There is also a local butcher close to the house with a good selection of meatBetween days at the pool we visited the surrounding area including Cognac, Bordeaux, Royan and La Rochelle. The property owner and managers were very helpful and gave us lots of information and recommendations for the local area

We originally booked the bigger half of the property (Thouvenin) to allow for a family break for 7 adults. However, it transpired that we ended up with only three. Plenty of room for us! The bedrooms are an excellent size and the 'main' bedrooms have large double beds and plenty of space. These are located at each end of the property. In between these two rooms are two further bedrooms which contain bunk beds- a double below and a single above in each room. Again the room sizes are very good. There is a family bathroom at one end of the house on the upper floor and a new shower room at the other end. All clean and well maintained. Downstairs is incredibly spacious, the kitchen is well equipped, the living room very large with two '3' seat sofas ( brand new) and several chairs plus a small table and a two dining chairs. Across from the living room is a wonderful dining room with decorative fireplace- it would have been great to sit around with the whole party- a little lost on just three of us but we still made use of it. The house was heated and was comfortable, the upstairs shower room has no heating but there is a stand alone radiator that can be used- not a problem in summer I'm sure- we were there for New Year so a little chilly. Outside has the seating areas, pool and petanque court but given the time of year we didn't make use and so can't comment. The village has a few shops, a butcher, baker and minimart but we didn't use these due to the opening hours during the holiday period. However, there are good supermarkets only a short drive in either direction (10 mins tops) in Martha or Burie. These catered for our needs very well. We did the run to Bordeaux airport twice and it is about 1 hour 20 mins or so each way. Again the time of year may have an impact. Antony provided fantastic amounts of information about the property and area plus all info on the local towns, markets, sightseeing etc etc. This has been the best communication we have had from an owner so thank you. We took the ferry to Calais and drove down- probably a little to far for one day in winter- it took about 7 1/2 hours. Consequently we left a day early to give ourselves a break of journey and an overnight stop to break it up. Summer may well be a better time to do it. However, the welcome pack was most gratefully received!! A nice touch indeed. We would certainly return if we were staying in this area again. Overall a quiet and relaxing winter break.
