Roubert is a beautiful white stone house with a large pool set in 3 acres of gardens, meadow and partly wooded land. It is a little piece of paradise in this charming part of south west France which benefits from the southern sun, lush greenery, excellent food and wine and bastide towns. Villages are especially charming as the local stone is creamy white.
The pool has been especially appreciated by guests as it is longer than most (42 feet long) allowing for a more satisfying swim. It has a very pretty setting, having a wide limestone surround, lavender borders and trees and meadow beyond. We also have a range of pool toys for children.
The spacious interior is light, modern and well appointed. Renovations have respected and enhanced the original character and features of this 19th century farmhouse. Outside the extensive grounds provide opportunities for swimming, table tennis, trampoline, boules but also quiet gardens and sitting areas cater for those preferring more contemplative pursuits.
The gardens are extensive and include a herb garden, woods, meadow, a table tennis area, boules ...and several seating areas with tables or loungers and parasols.
The house is situated at the edge of a picturesque hamlet, in an area known as the golden triangle formed by the 3 medieval towns of Cordes sur Ciel, Gaillac and Albi (designated a world heritage site) and is a perfect base for exploring the many fortified hilltop bastide towns. The local countryside is undulating with vineyards - it is part of the famous Gaillac wine region - and outstanding restaurants are within easy reach. Just a few miles away, the Aveyron region brings dramatic contrast with deep gorges and fast flowing rivers, with kayaking and white water rafting available.
The house has been renovated and furnished to enhance the character of this old farmhouse. All rooms are very large (around 25/30 sq m).
The accommodation includes:
- Two large indoor living rooms, one opening out through french doors onto the garden and pool area.
- The large kitchen connects to:
- A dining area in the attached barn.
- Four bedrooms: there are three double bedrooms and one twin. One of the bedrooms has a mezzanine floor with an additional bed.
- Bathrooms: two of the bedrooms are ensuite and there are two additional bathrooms, one with bath as well as shower.

Situation
Roubert is situated on the edge of a very quiet picturesque hamlet, and nestles in its own 3 acres of grounds ensuring peace and seclusion. The immediate countryside is very green, with softly rolling hills, vineyards, some arable farming and many woods. A few miles to the north the more dramatic Aveyron region offers spectacular gorges and fast flowing rivers. We are in what is known as the 'golden triangle' being surrounded by three famous medieval towns, Cordes sur Ciel, Gaillac and Albi which has been designated a world heritage site.
Shopping
It is a mile and a half far from a village, which has 2 bakeries, a farm shop and small supermarket. There are 4 markets within easy reach on different days of the week and very large supermarkets in Gaillac and Albi. Albi also has 'high end' shops selling very elegant items as does Toulouse (an hour away). Cordes sur Ciel is one of several small bastide towns with
The house lies at the edge of the famous Gaillac wine region, and so vineyards abound and wine tasting is a popular pastime.
Restaurant
It is an excellent area for restaurants some providing local fare at very reasonable prices as Vigne en Foule in Gaillac and l'Epicurien in Albi.
Festivals
Each of the surrounding villages has a particular weekend of festival with a unique theme, eg 'the festival of he four ovens' where the 4 traditional village ovens are used to bake bread and pastries and visitors and children can take part in the bread making. Another village has a massive flea market, medieval jousting, etc. Boules and dinner in the village square in the evening open to all is common.
Table tennis, boules and swimming are available within the grounds of the property. A tennis court is available in Cordes.
The surrounding area offers plenty of walking and cycling opportunities as well as riverside activities.

How to get to La Roubert
- Travel by plane to Toulouse, flights leaving from several UK destinations. Easyjet and BA airlines among others go to Toulouse. There is a one hour drive from Toulouse to the house or travel by plane to Rodez from Stansted Airport with Ryanair (1.5hour drive to the house)
- By car, it is an 8 hour drive from St Malo or 9 hours from Calais, 6 and 1/2 hours drive from Paris.
- Trains go from Toulouse (or Rodez) and from there local rail will take you to Cordes Vindrac, Gaillac or Albi. You would need to get a taxi from these towns.

We stayed for a week in 40 degree heat (!) in August 2023 with our 3 youngish boys, my mother & sister. We had such a wonderful time. Isabel was incredibly helpful if we needed anything in the run up to the holiday and during the week. The house is beautiful, pared back and has everything you need. The pool is magnificent. Huge and with a shallow end perfect for loungers and learners: our 5 year old learned to swim independently while we were there. We also love this part of France with beautiful towns to be discovered. Next time, if the heat is a little more forgiving, we may drag ourselves away from the pool more!Guest rating:
I agree with all the positive remarks in the preceeding reviews. La Roubert is an idyllic place. It's an old farmhouse, converted sensitively and just enough to make a really comfortable house to live in. The walls are thick, ensuring coolness in very hot weather. The terrace, covered by a vine-clad pergola, is a delight. The pool is perfect, with easy steps down. The garden is lovely, with brilliant flowering shrubs. And beyond that there is a brilliant flower meadow, humming with bee and other insect life and butterflies. There is a range of different trees dotted about, and terrific bird life. La Roubert is clearly a well-loved home which is elegantly furnished and beautifully presented. We enjoyed local walks and discovering a very interesting region, including Albi, just 30 minutes away. Isabelle is extremely helpful and hands-on in ensuring that all goes smoothly--the house is well equipped and all in perfect order. The salt water pool is a delight!Guest rating:
The house is beautifully maintained and furnished to a high standard. There are numerous areas for eating and drinking throughout the large grounds and it has a very large pool in which to swim and cool off. The local area is very rural with some lovely towns and villages. Thanks for a lovely holiday.

This place is so good we have returned again and plan to do so next year! The property is set in a lovely big garden, ensuring privacy, with multiple sections/areas to explore. The house is big and clean, and the large bedrooms have very comfortable beds. The kitchen is well equipped, making cooking easy. There are multiple areas to sit and eat outdoors, allowing you to maximise the balmy weather. However the highlight has to be the amazing pool - it is delightful! On our first stay we alternated touring days with pool days. But for this last visit we spent most days lazing in or around the pool! It is big enough that the entire party can be in the pool at once and you still have plenty of room. There is equipment provided to allow you to enjoy various other activities, such as boules, badminton and trampolining. The host Isabelle (who is not on-site) is super helpful before you arrive and also during your stay if you need to enquire about anything. I can't recommend this home highly enough!Guest rating:
This is a really special place and we found it very hard to leave at the end of two weeks. The house is charming and comfortable, beautifully clean and yet characterful and homely. Good beds, sofas, well equipped kitchen, good bathrooms etc. The pool and garden are out of this world. The pool is huge so you can actually do some "proper" swimming - clear and fresh and not over-chlorinated. Gorgeous views of the trees and gardens and smells of the lavender and rosemary as you swim up and down. The gardens are simply enormous - even including a private meadow and woodland, as well as a herb garden and fruit trees. It's really a place where you can settle and relax and just savour the pleasure of being on holiday. If you can tear yourself away there are gorgeous walks through local vineyards, pretty hilltop market towns to visit, canoeing and swimming in the Aveyron etc. Isabelle is a wonderful, generous and accommodating host. We enjoyed a very relaxing week in this charming and characterful old house. The setting is quiet and peaceful and the gardens are a delight, with many beautiful trees and flowering plants and a haven for wildlife. We loved the large pool which was always clear and sparkling. The itself house was very clean on arrival and very comfortable. In addition to the well equipped farmhouse style kitchen there is a bbq which we made good use of most evenings. A bottle of wine and a jar of homemade jam were left for our arrival as well as milk, coffee etc, much appreciated. . There is a local caretaker and the owner (not on site) is also very helpful. Our damage deposit was returned promptly. We would thoroughly recommend La Roubert for a family holiday or just a quiet get-away for two, and have re-booked for 2016.Guest rating:
