Charming 3 Bedroom Cottage on Outskirts of Historic Confolens
La Petite Maison is a self-catering, holiday cottage in the beautiful family friendly minute hamlet, Le Bois de Pommeau, that nestles on the side of a small rounded outcrop of lush fields rising from the river Goire, which flows around the foot of the hill.
Confolens is within a short walk, with Poitiers and Angouleme only an hour away and Limoges even closer. The Vienne Valley is a beautiful part of the Poitou Charentes area of France with plenty of places of interest and many activities to keep everyone entertained throughout their visit.
The owners, Stuart and Maggie, live nearby in the hamlet and will maintain a discrete distance whilst being available to ensure you have a wonderful time. The house has been lovingly renovated from a mere shell by Stuart and Maggie and are finished to an extremely high standard both inside and out. The exterior walls have been lime rendered in the traditional Vendéen style known as “Pierre Apparent” or “Pierre Vu” – which means the stones of the wall are visible through the render finish. Inside there are lovely lime rendered walls with the odd piece of stonework peeking through. The wood has been cleaned up and stained to show the glorious French oak at its best – revealed beams throughout but the bedrooms with their apex ceilings are sensational. There is private parking as well as a large private garden with a terrace, pergola and plenty of lawn to play croquet, football or outdoor table tennis.
Le Bois de Pommeau is a family-owned smallholding with an impressive “potager” (fruit & vegetable garden) and collection of friendly animals.
There is plenty to do at Le Bois de Pommeau or within walking distance - you can fish or splash about in the River Goire, stroll around enjoying the pastoral views or slowly wend your way through the beautiful valley enjoying the flora and fauna into Confolens. Spotting lizards, hoopoes and buzzards can become an addictive pastime!
La Petite Maison is arranged over two floors and accommodation comprises:
Ground Floor
- The lounge/dining room with original beamed ceiling, wood burning stove and tiled floor. The room is well-furnished with a choice of comfortable seating, cushions, coffee tables and dining table with 6 chairs. To help keep you entertained there is English satellite TV ( free view), Wifi broadband internet connection. We also provide a choice of games and books for a range of ages.
- The fully equipped kitchen has a gas cooker/hob as well as a microwave oven for all your cooking needs. There is a kettle, coffee presse and toaster too. The dishwasher helps prevents arguments over who is washing or drying and the washing machine ensures your clothes are kept clean too! We provide all the crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and cooking tools you need – if you feel anything is missing just ask.
- A well-presented downstairs toilet with hand basin. Iron and ironing board. Indoor clothes airer and outside washing line.
First Floor
Leading off the beautiful wooden floored landing, with a great view over the garden of the cottage and beyond to the top field where the donkeys graze, are three nicely appointed bedrooms, each with real wooden floors, electric fans for those balmy summer nights, mosquito nets on the windows, and apex ceilings and exposed roof beams, providing sleeping for six. All linen and towels are provided. (A modern cot and highchair can also be provided free but please provide your own linen). The family shower room is also reached from the landing.
- Double Room: This room contains a double bed with bedside storage each side and a capacious wardrobe with not just hanging space for your clothes but plenty of shelving too. The window looks out over the rear of the cottage.
- Twin Room 1: With two beds, bedside storage. The window looks out over the front of the cottage down towards the river Goire.
- Double Room 2: The bedroom has plenty of storage for all your clothing. The window shares the aspect of twin room.
- Shower Room: Has a powerful enclosed shower; there is continuous hot water so not even a group of teenage girls can run out!
To keep your suitcases as small as possible – swimwear and sun tan lotion aren’t heavy after all – we provide pillows, duvets, ALL bed linen, shower and hand towels Free of Charge. We do request that you provide your own swimming pool towels.
The Garden
There is a mid-landing on the stairs that leads out to the rear of the cottage to the private, enclosed garden area.
In summer, with the glorious Charente weather, (the highest number of sunshine hours after La Côte d ’Azure) most of your time at the cottage will be spent outside enjoying your private garden. Breakfast can be taken sitting at the table and chairs on the terrace under the shade of the pergola. Later you can relax on one of the sun loungers if you prefer a more horizontal position.
Feeling more energetic? Then why not play one of the outdoor games we provide; full-sized table tennis, croquet and of course the traditional French game of 'pétanque'. There is plenty of room to lose any excess energy you or the kids may have! The wooden framed raised splash pool is 5.3m x 3.3m x 1.22m. Chlorinated and sand-filtered, it benefits from solar heating and a night insulation cover, plus removable external steps for child safety. Hours of fun, splashing and laughter or a relaxing place to float and chill out, or maybe just cool down after sunbathing on one of the gardens loungers.
Whilst in the garden check out the view across the valley; the treeline on the horizon is spectacular at all hours of the day but in particular at sunrise and sunset.
The local, friendly farmer (a friend of the owners) keeps some of his traditional Limousine cows in the fields surrounding Le Bois de Pommeau and the garden backs on to a large field with Pommeau's lovely donkeys.
La petite maison, Le bois de Pommeau, is two kilometres from the beautiful town of Confolens' bars, restaurants, live music nights, farmers markets, shopping, cinema, public outdoor pools, tennis, pedelos, kayaking et velorail. An excellent base to discover the Poitou-Charente region.
Confolens (twinned with Pitlochry in Scotland), the capital of the Charente-Limousine, is an ancient town on the Vienne river, at its confluence with the River Goire, surrounded by rolling pastoral countryside. There are still picturesque remnants of its medieval past to view, including city walls, “dongon”, town gate, impressive town hall, several "colombage" houses dating from the 15th and 16th century and features a 13th century granite bridge with the "Fontaine de la Fontrose", an ancient spring at one end.
If visiting points of interest is your thing then there are many chateaux and tourist spots within just a short drive including; the martyr village of Oradour-sur-Glane, the Roman springs and baths at Chassenon, the war memorial and graveyard to the resistance at Chassneuil, Brigueuil a fortified village, the Vallée de Singe where you can actually walk among monkeys, many lakes and rivers with beaches and leisure activities, local artisans – in fact too many to name – plenty to discover and explore for all ages.
Poitiers, Angoulême and Limoges all offer some tantalising pastimes, which merit day trips.
Throughout the summer there are many activities on offer including, swimming, canoeing, high tree wires, archery, rambling, VTT cycling, bungee jumping, golf, fishing, attraction parks, painting and of course the famous velo-rail and plenty more.

We stayed at la petit Maison in late July 2020. We booked at the last minute due to travel concerns around covid. We are a family of 2 adults 3 children 1 infant. Booking the cottage was very easy & the owner was quick to reply & confirm our stay, payment was easy through PayPal. On arrival we were welcomed by the owner & given a quick tour of the house & garden. The owners live in the detached barn across the courtyard but are very respectful of guests privacy. They are on hand if needed though. The house is set in the French countryside, it is very quiet which was perfect for us. The house is in excellent condition very clean inside, the large garden is very well maintained, has a nice pool for guests sole use & swing set for the kids. There are donkeys in the adjoining field which you can feed & also chickens to see too. I would not hesitate to return to la Petit Maison another time. We had a lovely holiday, many thanks.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in La Petite Maison and the only negative thing I can say is that we had to come home. The house is well presented with some quaint features and provided are some fun family games (Monopoly, jigsaws, etc) in addition to lots of tourist information. The wi-fi (which we needed for work sadly) was very good and although the house is small (as we expected from the name and pictures), it was more than adequate for a family with 3 small children. The garden is a great size and we spent most of our time outside anyway in the pool. Whilst maintaining a discreet distance, Maggie was most generous in answering the many questions from our inquisitive children, and the animals kept them running excitedly about the whole time. In particular the donkeys and pony will be sorely missed! We stayed for a total of 10 days and hardly felt a need to go anywhere else. However we made it to Confolens, which is a beautiful place to visit and there are plenty of amenities there. Circumstances allowing, we hope to return for a longer stay next year! La Petite Maison is a perfect French getaway. Maggie and Stuart are the perfect hosts - on hand if you need anything but at a discrete distant so you really feel that you have the place to yourself. The gite itself is fantastic and is really comfortable with everything you need. The welcome pack is filled with lovely goodies and everything you need for a couple of days if you can't get to the shops. Maggie and Stuart's 2 dogs and cats give you a friendly welcome and Maggie's hens provide lovely fresh eggs for you.The stars of the show however are Toupee the Shetland pony and her 4 donkey friends who make perfect neighbours and will love you forever if you have a carrot or an apple to offer them. Look out for Doris who has lovely big brown eyes and ears to match which she'll happily let you tickle! We've been coming here since the gite opened and love it. You have your own massive garden area to the rear complete with private pool, swing area and plenty of grass for kids of all ages to play. Lovely pergola for those lazy wine-filled evenings with views over the valley and to the field behind with the donkeys and pony in. Maggie even gave us some freshly picked tomatoes and courgettes from their potager - the family are lovely and leave you in peace but are there to help if you need it :-) The area has loads to do and is gorgeous with many medieval buildings and is just so different to England you really feel you're on holiday. TOTALLY recommend it - BUT not the week I want to book.Guest rating:
