La Baïonnette: Self-catering house with country views and pool in South West France
A rustic 19th-century conversion with 21st-century comforts.
Private and peaceful, La Baïonnette has been restored and updated to offer maximum charm and comfort.
With a large swimming pool, covered patio dining area and gentle valley views, the property is set on one hectare of treed land among neighbouring sunflower fields and vineyards.
The house is 4kms from Cahuzac-sur-Vere offering all essentials, and a 15-minute drive to the bustling market town, Gaillac, with parks, boutiques, supermarkets and a train station.
La Baïonnette is within easy cycling or driving distance of the many historic Bastide villages, rivers, forests and kayak-friendly gorges that give this gently undulating part of France its distinct character, not forgetting the numerous wine-tasting caves sprinkled across this fertile, sun-saturated corner of countryside paradise.
This property comprises:
Inside:

Downstairs:

Peaceful and private, La Baïonnette is the complete country getaway surrounded by the rivers, forests and vineyards of this little corner of French paradise.
It is also your gateway to the historic Bastide villages, Michelin-starred restaurants, bustling market towns and mediaeval-meets-modern cities within striking distance. Visit Albi, a Unesco World Heritage Site city, for its beautiful bridges, lush gardens, shops and the famously formidable cathedral of St Cecile. Steeped in Cathar history, hilltop villages like Cordes-sur-Ciel, Puycelci and Castelnau-de-Montmiral are a short drive away.
Markets offering the freshest seasonal produce - plump fruits, wine, garlic, foie gras - take place daily in different villages. A Sunday favourite is the one in the funky, fabulous Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, where you can kayak through the towering gorges of the Aveyron River before lunch.
On the subject of the fabulous wine ... the area boasts vineyards and wine tasting 'caves' on every country corner. Check out the "Happy" wine makers and shakers of our village and surrounds, dancing to rapper Pharrell's tune on YouTube.
Les Vignerons de Gaillac sont "HAPPY" avec Gaillac Visit ...
Throughout summer, evening street parties abound on local village greens and squares, offering food, local wines and live - usually free - music, from jazz and rock to the traditional touring folk bands of the L'Occitan.
Toulouse, the Pink City (so named for its rosy brick buildings, though it is gay friendly by all accounts, too!), is a 50-minute picture-perfect train ride from Gaillac, the riverside town 15 minutes from your home village, Vieux.
Even closer to home, Cahuzac-sur-Vère (a 5-minute drive) has bakeries, banks, a bar, etc., and an excellent family-run deli and patisserie.
Three adult hybrid bicycles are available at La Baionnette.
A boules set is available. Throughout summer there is a game every Friday night in our village, Vieux.
The closest 18 hole golf course is in Albi which is a 20 minute drive.

Thank you Charlotte and Clive for caring for us so well with plenty of local information without the slightest bit of intrusion, you added a dimension to our holiday.
After picking our (grown up) Children from a bustling busy Toulouse in great heat arrived at La Baoinette in the afternoon. It was love at first sight, from the Ivy clad walls, the perfect outside covered sitting area ……. and that pool. salt water pool what a lovely surprise. Lined by lavender bushes, allowing big entertainment from hummingbird moths, what a lovely surprise ! The house, a lovely renovation, comfortable big rooms. A kitchen fit for a permanent home rather than a holiday home. Had many ‘cooks ‘among us (all male) and they made good use of it . The sitting room, very comfortable, big sofas enough room for all to spread out and lounge if they were so inclined. The ‘Garden’: No big garden needed when surrounded by the gentle hills of the area with views of sunflower fields, corn/wheat fields and farmhouses on the hill. But loved the garden and the night transformation of the solar powered fairy lights. The area: Our fifth time in France confirms our favourite house and favourite area. From medieval ‘ceilii’ dancing in Vieux to the ‘could have stayed all night’ Fetes de La Musique ‘in Cordes . Love Albi. Love it all. Even the hanging out the washing a pleasure peering over the washing line at the fields of France. To summarize , In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, (if you will have us), I’ll (we’ll) be back.Guest rating:
I stayed at La Baïonnette for several weeks in June and July 2010 and in July 2011, and it is without doubt one of the most memorable holidays I've ever spent in France. The swimming pool has become my benchmark for what constitutes a fantastic pool (and how private a pool should be); the cherries on the many trees around the property are the sweetest I've ever eaten; and the Soccer World Cup acquired new meaning because I watched it over the rim of a glass filled with pastis or Champagne. I walked and walked, then cycled some, then practised my woeful French on the very sympathetic neighbours; and then watched the sunflowers grow and the wheat ripen. This place is heaven.
